Chapter 4 - The Gathering Storm Over The City Of Wind

The atmosphere inside Adrian's heavily fortified downtown penthouse was crackling with intense and dangerous electricity,

feeling like the heavy and suffocating air just moments before a massive lightning strike.

We had been moved from the secure hospital under the thick cover of absolute darkness,

surrounded by a massive convoy of heavily armored vehicles and heavily armed loyalists.

I was resting comfortably on a massive velvet sofa in the center of the expansive living room,

surrounded by incredibly soft pillows and covered with a heavy cashmere blanket.

Through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows,

the glittering skyline of Chicago looked deceptively peaceful and perfectly calm.

But inside this room,

the absolute reality of war was being carefully and ruthlessly mapped out.

Marcus Hale stood tall in front of a massive digital command screen,

his face glowing slightly from the bright and complex territorial maps illuminating the dark room.

"The Cross family has completely abandoned their western warehouses,"

Marcus reported in a sharp and highly professional tone,

"and they are pulling all of their heavy hitters back to their central compound."

Adrian paced slowly back and forth across the expensive Persian rug,

moving with the restless and terrifying energy of a caged predator waiting to strike.

"They are consolidating their forces,"

Adrian analyzed coldly,

his sharp mind calculating a thousand different variables and strategic outcomes every single second.

"Richard knows his pathetic assassination attempt completely failed,"

Adrian continued,

"and he knows that I will never,

ever forgive this ultimate betrayal."

I watched them work with a mixture of deep fascination and creeping anxiety,

my hands resting protectively over my stomach as the baby shifted restlessly inside me.

Suddenly,

the secure private line on the heavy glass desk began to ring with a sharp,

piercing tone.

The entire room fell completely silent,

the tension instantly skyrocketing to an almost unbearable and suffocating level.

Adrian walked slowly toward the ringing phone,

his face a completely unreadable mask of cold and terrifying indifference.

He pressed the glowing speaker button,

allowing the incoming audio to echo loudly throughout the massive penthouse.

"Adrian,"

Victoria's voice filtered through the high-quality speakers,

sounding incredibly shrill and vibrating with poorly contained,

manic fury.

"You publicly humiliated my entire family in front of the whole city,"

she spat venomously,

her words dripping with absolute hatred and deeply wounded pride.

Adrian leaned casually against the edge of the glass desk,

his posture remarkably relaxed despite the deadly seriousness of the conversation.

"Your father tried to serve me a cup of lethal poison at my own altar,

Victoria,"

Adrian replied smoothly,

his deep voice completely devoid of any emotion or warmth.

"Do not expect any apologies from me,"

he added sharply,

"because you will absolutely never get one."

"She is lying,"

Victoria shrieked loudly,

the desperate sound echoing harshly off the expensive penthouse walls.

"That pregnant street trash invented the whole ridiculous story just to steal you back,"

she accused wildly.

Adrian's eyes instantly darkened into absolute black pits of terrifying fury,

his large hands gripping the edge of the desk so tightly his knuckles turned completely white.

"If you ever speak about my future wife or my unborn child like that again,"

Adrian warned in a voice so deadly quiet it made the hair on my arms stand up,

"I will personally ensure that the Cross family name is completely erased from history."

There was a sharp gasp from the other end of the secure line,

followed quickly by the abrupt and definitive click of a disconnected call.

Adrian ended the connection,

turning to look directly at me with a gaze full of fierce and unwavering protection.

The storm had finally broken,

and there was absolutely no turning back now.
