Chapter 2 - The Awakening Within The White Fortress

The rhythmic and steady beeping of a medical monitor was the first thing to reach my returning senses,

pulling me slowly from the deep and dreamless darkness.

I fluttered my heavy eyelids open,

blinking against the harsh and bright fluorescent lights of the private hospital room.

The air smelled strongly of clinical antiseptic and crisp linen,

a sharp contrast to the damp and heavy air of the stormy cathedral.

I instinctively moved my hand to rest protectively over the large curve of my stomach,

letting out a soft breath of relief when I felt the familiar flutter of movement inside.

"You are awake,"

a deep and gravelly voice spoke from the corner of the silent room,

sending a sudden shiver of awareness cascading down my tired spine.

I turned my head slowly,

finding Adrian sitting in a leather chair beside the heavily shaded window.

He looked completely exhausted,

his usually pristine tuxedo jacket discarded carelessly on the floor,

his white dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar and sleeves rolled up to reveal his muscular forearms.

His dark hair was messy from running his hands through it repeatedly,

and shadows of deep worry darkened the sharp angles of his handsome face.

He leaned forward,

resting his elbows on his knees,

his piercing eyes analyzing every single detail of my pale face.

"The doctor says you are severely dehydrated,"

Adrian stated in a remarkably controlled tone,

"and suffering from extreme physical exhaustion,

but the baby is perfectly healthy and safe."

I nodded weakly,

tears suddenly springing to my eyes as the overwhelming reality of the situation crashed over me.

"I am so sorry for ruining your wedding day,"

I whispered softly,

my voice cracking with raw emotion and lingering fear.

Adrian let out a harsh and bitter laugh,

standing up abruptly and closing the distance between us in two long strides.

He sat gently on the very edge of the pristine hospital bed,

reaching out to lightly cup my cheek with his warm and calloused hand.

"You saved my life,

Claire,"

he corrected me firmly,

his thumb gently wiping away a stray tear that fell from my eye.

"Marcus had the hospital lab test the wine,"

he continued,

his voice dropping to a dangerous and furious whisper,

"and it was laced with a highly concentrated and completely undetectable toxin."

I shuddered involuntarily,

closing my eyes as a wave of cold horror washed over my entire body.

"I overheard them,"

I explained rapidly,

desperately needing him to understand everything that had happened.

"I was working extra shifts at a private catering company,"

I continued to explain,

"and we were hired to serve at a secret meeting for the Cross family."

Adrian's jaw tightened visibly,

his dark eyes burning with an intense and protective fury as he listened to my words.

"I heard Richard talking to his associates,"

I whispered,

"bragging about how the marriage was just a distraction,

how he planned to eliminate you at the altar and take over all your territories."

Adrian leaned his forehead against mine,

his breath warm and comforting against my trembling skin.

"Why did you leave me seven months ago,

Claire,"

he asked softly,

the vulnerability in his voice completely breaking my fragile heart.

"Because the syndicate demanded you marry Victoria to stop the violence,"

I sobbed quietly,

"and I knew my presence would only bring you endless danger and deadly conflict."

I looked down at my stomach,

my hands trembling violently.

"When I found out about the baby,"

I confessed through my falling tears,

"I knew I had to run away to protect our innocent child from this dangerous life."

Adrian placed his large hand gently over mine,

his touch sending waves of reassuring heat through my cold fingers.

"You are my life,

Claire,"

he vowed fiercely,

"and this baby is my only true legacy."

May you like

He kissed my forehead with intense devotion.

"No one will ever threaten my family again."
