Chapter 3 - The Heavy Burden Of Our Silent Secrets

The hours stretched endlessly inside the highly secured and strictly monitored hospital suite,
wrapped in a strange and delicate bubble of fragile peace.
Adrian had absolutely refused to leave my side for even a single moment,
stationing his most elite and trusted guards at every possible entrance and exit of the medical floor.
The silence between us was heavily loaded with seven long months of unspoken words,
filled with painful misunderstandings and desperately hidden longing.
I watched him carefully as he poured a fresh glass of cold water,
his movements deliberately slow and heavily calculated to avoid startling my frayed nerves.
"I spent every single day searching the entire city for you,"
Adrian finally spoke,
his deep voice breaking the heavy silence as he handed me the small glass.
"I hired the best private investigators in the country,"
he continued,
his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my breath catch in my throat,
"but you vanished completely,
leaving absolutely no trace behind for me to follow."
I took a small and shaky sip of the refreshing water,
feeling the cooling liquid soothe my painfully dry and raw throat.
"I had to be invisible,"
I explained softly,
staring down at the condensation forming quickly on the side of the fragile glass.
"I paid for everything in cash,"
I elaborated,
"lived in a tiny apartment under a completely fake name,
and worked extremely long hours just to survive the harsh winter."
Adrian closed his eyes tightly,
a deep expression of profound pain washing over his strong and handsome features.
"You were sleeping in my bed,"
he whispered hoarsely,
"laughing with me in that tiny kitchen,
and the next morning you were just completely gone."
He sat heavily in the chair beside my bed,
leaning forward to rest his face in his large and capable hands.
"When the ruling council demanded the marriage to Victoria,"
he admitted slowly,
"I had already planned to completely dismantle the entire syndicate just to stay with you."
My eyes widened in genuine shock,
the glass trembling slightly in my weak and unsteady grip.
"You would have risked a massive and destructive war for me,"
I asked in disbelief,
unable to comprehend the massive depth of his hidden sacrifice.
"I would have burned this entire miserable city to the ground for you,"
Adrian stated with absolute and chilling certainty,
dropping his hands to reveal the fierce and unyielding determination burning brightly in his eyes.
"But you left before I could tell you my plan,"
he added quietly,
a hint of deep sorrow coloring his usually commanding and authoritative tone.
"I thought I was saving you,"
I cried out softly,
reaching out to gently touch his muscular arm.
"I thought if I walked away,
you could secure your power and avoid a deadly and bloody conflict."
Adrian turned his hand over,
intertwining his long fingers tightly with mine.
"There is absolutely no power in this world worth having if you are not standing by my side,"
he vowed passionately,
bringing my hand to his lips to press a tender and lingering kiss against my knuckles.
"And now that I know about our child,"
he continued,
his gaze dropping lovingly to the prominent curve of my pregnant stomach,
"everything completely changes right now,
tonight."
I felt a sudden rush of warmth and undeniable love flood my tired body,
erasing the months of cold loneliness and constant, paralyzing fear.
"What happens now,"
I asked nervously,
the harsh reality of the dangerous situation slowly creeping back into my mind.
Adrian's expression instantly hardened into a mask of pure and terrifying authority,
the feared Chicago Wolf finally emerging from the shadows of the caring father.
"Now,"
May you like
Adrian said coldly,
"we prepare for the inevitable storm."
