Chapter 18 - The Shadows That Faded Into History

Months passed like a gentle,

uninterrupted breeze through our isolated mountain sanctuary,

far away from the brutal turf wars and blood-soaked streets of downtown Chicago.

Lucas grew rapidly,

transforming into a bright,

laughing baby who possessed his mother's warm smile and his father's undeniable tenacity.

The remnants of the Cross family had long since scattered to the winds,

their remaining assets absorbed quietly and legally into the vast network of legitimate businesses Adrian had spent the last year establishing.

The criminal underworld quickly learned a new reality: the Chicago Wolf had not grown weak by taking a wife and having a child—he had simply grown infinitely more powerful,

anchored by something far stronger than fear.

One crisp autumn afternoon,

I sat on the expansive stone patio overlooking the golden-red forest,

watching Adrian walk across the manicured lawn with Lucas balanced securely on his broad shoulders.

Our son was giggling uncontrollably,

his tiny hands gripping handfuls of his father's dark hair as Adrian playfully pretended to growl like a fierce monster.

The sight of the most feared man in the country completely wrapped around a nine-month-old baby's finger never failed to warm my heart.

Adrian caught me watching them from the patio table,

and a slow,

deeply affectionate smile spread across his handsome face.

He walked over,

lowering Lucas carefully into my waiting arms before pulling a chair close to mine and sitting down.

"The latest reports from the financial board just came in,"

Adrian mentioned casually,

resting his chin on his hand as he watched me gently tickle our son's tummy.

"And let me guess,"

I smiled playfully,

looking up into his dark,

devoted eyes.

"Everything is entirely legitimate,

completely profitable,

and miles away from the shadows of our past?"

Adrian reached across the table,

intertwining his warm fingers with mine.

"Completely and entirely,"

he confirmed softly.

"We own half the commercial real estate downtown,

our shipping lines are clean,

and the syndicate council knows better than to ever cross our threshold again."

He leaned in closer,

his voice dropping to a low,

intimate murmur that only I could hear.

"You changed everything,

Claire.

You walked into my cathedral on the worst day of my life,

and you completely saved my soul."

"We saved each other,

Adrian,"

I corrected him gently,

leaning my head against his solid shoulder while Lucas cooed happily between us.

The violent storms of our past were nothing more than distant memories,

May you like

fading rapidly into the brilliant,

golden light of our unbreakable future.
