Chapter 8 - THE HART AUDIT

Malcolm Hart entered the investigation voluntarily after his attorney informed him the drive existed.

Stroke had left his right hand weak.

Not his memory.

He sat in a conference room and looked at Nicholas.

“Your father taught me the trick.”

Nicholas’s eyes hardened.

“What trick?”

“Borrow first. Explain later.”

At least he was honest.

Malcolm had watched Anthony temporarily use relief money during the old liquidity crisis.

Anthony repaid most.

Malcolm internalized the wrong lesson.

When Hartwell Foundation faced cash pressure during a hospital expansion, he directed $1.8 million from the joint relief reserve into a construction vendor he controlled indirectly.

Intended to repay.

Then project overruns grew.

He moved more.

By the time Daniel audited, Hart-linked exposure exceeded $6 million.

Did Malcolm personally enrich himself?

Partly.

Some transfers supported projects where he owned equity.

Not all went into his pocket.

Still self-dealing.

Then he hid it.

Why?

Because admitting the first unauthorized loan would trigger donor review.

So he created consulting contracts.

Then more.

The cover became larger than the initial misconduct.

Classic.

Did he know Daniel was Anthony’s son?

“No.”

Nicholas watched carefully.

Malcolm appeared genuinely surprised when told.

Vivienne too.

So that family secret had not driven the audit.

Did Malcolm threaten Daniel?

He admitted confronting him.

“I told him he would never work in philanthropy again if he accused me publicly before completing the audit.”

Ugly.

Not murder.

Daniel died in unrelated crash two weeks later.

Malcolm felt relief.

He hated admitting that.

“Did you destroy records?”

“Yes.”

There.

Some.

Did he take Daniel’s flash drive?

“No.”

The drive had never left Mr. Buttons.

Did he send the anonymous email to Vivienne?

“No.”

Forensics later supported.

The email originated from a system linked to Malcolm’s former CFO:

Gregory Lane.

Lane had handled many suspicious transfers.

Alive.

Currently living in Connecticut.

Why send it now?

Lane knew Hart-Caruso marriage would trigger due diligence.

He feared old records emerging.

He wanted Vivienne to remove Maria quietly before anyone reopened Daniel’s audit.

He weaponized Malcolm’s fear without exposing himself.

Lane had also benefited:

$900,000 through consulting entities.

Prosecutors became involved.

Civil claims.

Charity regulators.

No Nicholas violence required.

He disliked how satisfying subpoenas had become.

Then Vivienne.

She cooperated.

That did not erase Lucy’s wrist.

Maria filed a police report after thinking for two days.

Not because Nicholas pushed.

Vivienne faced investigation for child endangerment/assault based on the grab, though severity and charging decisions remained with authorities.

She offered no money to Maria.

Good.

No settlement attempt before process.

She wrote a letter.

Maria refused to read it.

Also good.

Nicholas ended the engagement formally.

Not because of her father’s financial crime.

Not because she might lose status.

Because she had grabbed a three-year-old hard enough to leave marks, searched Maria’s private space, and tried to expel mother and child to conceal a document.

Vivienne accepted.

She said:

“I became exactly the kind of person I always claimed my father wasn’t.”

Nicholas answered:

“You became yourself for five minutes.”

She flinched.

He continued:

“What matters is what you do after.”

No reconciliation.

No cruelty.

Then Vivienne resigned from Hartwell Foundation’s board and supported independent restitution.

Was that redemption?

Not yet.

Action.

The Hart audit resulted in:

$6.4 million identified improper Hart-linked transfers.

$0.5 million unresolved Caruso historical balance.

$1.3 million administrative misclassification.

$1.6 million still unexplained.

That unexplained amount bothered Nicholas.

Daniel had labeled it:

GRANITE ACCOUNT.

No vendor ownership.

No obvious Hart.

No Caruso.

Transfers began before Malcolm’s misuse.

Continued after Isabella died.

Ended the month Daniel died.

Not because of his death necessarily.

Timing.

Recipient bank:

Granite Harbor Fiduciary.

Beneficiary sealed.

Alexandra said:

“Separate problem.”

May you like

Nicholas nodded.

But Daniel had highlighted it in red.
