Chapter 50 - THE SUBTERRANEAN ARTERY

Isabella dragged herself upright using the edge of the console, tears of agony cutting clean tracks through the dust on her face. Her left arm hung at an unnatural angle, the ulna visibly displaced under her silk sleeve.

"The vault doors are locked on a ten-minute cycle," she panted, her chest heaving. "When Evelyn engaged the perimeter jammer, it tripped the security override Arthur installed. The system thinks the compound is under aerial bombardment. It will seal this entire wing with hydraulic foam in less than seven minutes."

Nicholas glanced at the master terminal. On the monochrome monitor, a red countdown timer was flashing: **06:42... 06:41... 06:40...**

Beside them, Victor let out a long, shuddering sigh. The drum of his heels stopped. His head rolled to the side, his lifeless eyes staring into the dark corner of the vault he had spent his life building.

"Victor is gone," Nicholas said, his voice flat, devoid of emotion. He looked down at Evelyn, who was sitting against the wall, her silver hair disheveled, watching him with an amused detachment. "Where is the override for the ventilation sub-levels?"

"You're the master of the house, darling," Evelyn murmured. "Figure it out."

Nicholas ignored her. He stepped to the primary terminal, entered Arthur Bell's personal seven-digit bypass code, and followed it with his own biometric thumbprint. The screen flickered, shifting from red to amber: **EMERGENCY EXPULSION PROTOCOL INITIALIZED. VENT SHAFT B-4 UNLOCKED.**

"Arthur didn't build an escape hatch," Nicholas said, turning to Isabella. "He built a drainage culvert that connects to the old aqueduct system beneath the Hudson line."

"That culvert has been flooded since nineteen-seventy-five," Isabella choked out, leaning against the terminal. "The water level is four feet high and freezing. We'll drown."

"You can drown in the culvert, or you can choke on expanding chemical foam in five minutes," Nicholas said. He grabbed Evelyn by the collar of her cashmere coat, hauling her to her feet with one arm as though she weighed nothing. "Move."

He dragged Evelyn toward the heavy service grate at the rear of the vault. Using the tire iron Victor had dropped, Nicholas wedged the tapered end into the locking mechanism of the grate, putting his entire weight behind it. With a violent screech of tearing metal, the bolt sheared off, and the iron grate swung outward into the pitch-black void.

A blast of freezing, stagnant air rushed into the vault, reeking of wet stone, moss, and river silt.

From somewhere deep down in the dark, thirty feet below, came the sound of rushing water.

"Down the ladder," Nicholas commanded Isabella.

"I can't climb with one arm!" she cried.

Nicholas didn't argue. He pulled a length of climbing webbing from his vest, looped it securely around Isabella’s chest, and hitched it to his own harness. "If you fall, you pull me with you. So don't fall."

He shoved Evelyn toward the rungs set into the concrete wall. "After you, Mother. Let's see if that cashmere keeps you warm in the Hudson drift."

As Evelyn placed her polished leather boots onto the rusted rungs, the klaxon overhead changed pitch, shifting to a high-pitched, piercing whine.

**01:00... 00:59... 00:58...**

A dense, white chemical fog began hissing from the ceiling nozzles, expanding instantly into a suffocating wall of foam. Nicholas swung himself onto the ladder, pulled the heavy grate shut behind him, and began the descent into the abyss just as the vault above them was swallowed by solid polyurethane stone.
