Chapter 42 - THE TRIBUNAL OF SILENCE

"You used my instincts to bait him," Nicholas said into the phone, his voice steady, though a deep, simmering fire burned beneath every syllable.

"I used what you are, Nicholas," Isabella replied coldly. "A weapon. The only weapon capable of breaking Victor Caruso’s grip on this family. The federal agents at the gate aren't Victor’s friends. They belong to Special Agent Miller—Arthur Bell’s personal asset inside the Department of Justice. The warrants aren't for you, Nicholas. Look at the perimeter screens if you don't believe me."

Nicholas stepped toward an old desktop terminal mounted to the wall—an archaic relay connected to the manor’s closed-circuit grid via private fiber. He flicked the toggle switch.

The screen flickered to life.

The security cameras at the Caruso estate’s main gates showed black tactical vans, but the men pouring out were not arresting the household staff. They were detaining Victor’s personal bodyguards, stripping their weapons, and loading them into transport trucks.

"Victor called the raid," Nicholas muttered, realizing the magnitude of the play.

"Victor thought he called the raid," Isabella corrected him. "He dialed a sanitized frequency that had been rerouted to Arthur’s task force six months ago. Every order Victor gave down in that tunnel was recorded. Every confession he spat at you is sitting on the Deputy Attorney General’s desk right now."

Victor slumped against the boiler, clutching his ruined shoulder, staring blankly at the soot between his shoes. "You... you can't prosecute me," he croaked. "I have the immunity agreement from 1994. Arthur co-signed it."

"Arthur revoked it forty-eight hours before his death, Father," Isabella’s voice rang out, pitiless and absolute. "The revocation is in the Morning Vault. Along with the unredacted ledgers containing the bank accounts of every senator, judge, and police commissioner you bought over thirty years."

Nicholas looked back at Daniel Santos, who was struggling to sit up on the cot. Maria had brought Lucy over, and the little girl’s eyes suddenly widened as she saw the man in the bed.

"Daddy?" Lucy whimpered, wriggling out of Maria’s arms. "Daddy! You’re not sleeping anymore!"

Daniel broke down, gathering the child into his arms, weeping into her hair. "Lucy... baby... oh God, Lucy..."

Nicholas stood motionless in the center of the boiler room, feeling the phantom weight of twenty years of violence lifting from his shoulders—only to be replaced by a far more dangerous vacuum.

"Isabella," Nicholas said into the receiver. "You cleared the board. You destroyed Victor. You protected the child. But you locked the vault from the inside."

"I did," she said softly.

"Why?"

A long silence hung over the line, broken only by the distant crackle of snow falling against the skylight above.

"Because the ledger doesn't just name Victor’s politicians, Nicholas," she said, her voice dropping all theatricality, revealing a raw, jagged sorrow. "It names the man who ordered the hit on your mother twenty-three years ago."
