Chapter 64 - ARTHUR’S LAST AUTHORITY

Arthur looked defeated.

Not surprised.

That was worse.

“You knew.”

Nicholas’s voice was quiet.

Arthur shook his head.

“Not all of it.”

“Enough.”

“Yes.”

Maria was present this time.

She had asked to be.

Not because Lucy was involved directly.

Because Arthur had repeatedly used Lucy as bait and she wanted no more closed-room decisions.

Arthur accepted that.

Good.

Mercer designated Arthur as Mirror Custodian in 2015.

Before Mercer died.

Arthur refused.

Mercer installed the authority anyway.

Why Arthur?

Because both roots knew him.

Nicholas.

Through family.

Anna.

Through St. Jude guardianship oversight.

Arthur could halt automatic disclosure if both adults independently revoked biometric authority.

“Then do it,” Nicholas said.

Arthur looked down.

“I can.”

“But?”

“Stopping the mirror permanently requires surrendering my archive key.”

“So?”

“That key also controls the last protected-witness accounts.”

Silence.

Not mafia assets.

People.

Former informants.

Relocated staff.

Families whose addresses were hidden because Victor or other organizations once threatened them.

Closing Arthur’s key recklessly could expose them or freeze support.

Another system where good and bad shared infrastructure.

Maria shook her head.

“Separate them.”

Arthur almost smiled sadly.

“That is what I should have done thirty years ago.”

Federal trust lawyers went to work.

Not overnight.

No countdown.

Good.

Three weeks.

Every protected-witness account identified.

Transferred lawfully to independent administrators.

Addresses kept sealed.

No Caruso access.

No Mercer access.

No Arthur control.

Then the day came.

Nicholas.

Remote secure room.

Anna.

Camera still off.

Arthur.

Federal judge.

Trust counsel.

Maria as observer for Lucy-related privacy.

Rose as independent family witness.

Daniel declined.

His choice.

Root One revocation.

Nicholas placed his hand on the scanner.

Then stopped.

Everyone tensed.

Nicholas looked at Arthur.

“After this, no one can reactivate me?”

“No.”

“Stored sample?”

“Destroyed after court evidence retention.”

“No future descendant?”

“None.”

Nicholas signed.

ROOT ONE:

REVOKED.

Anna did the same remotely.

ROOT TWO:

REVOKED.

System displayed:

FAMILY MIRROR PENDING.

Arthur entered custodian key.

His hand shook.

Then stopped.

He looked at Nicholas.

“I spent my life believing the right person holding power made power safe.”

Nicholas said nothing.

Arthur continued:

“I was wrong.”

He entered final termination.

FAMILY MIRROR:

CANCELLED.

MERCER SUCCESSION PROTOCOL:

TERMINATED.

Silence.

No explosion.

No sirens.

No dramatic blackout.

Just words on a screen.

Done.

Arthur removed the brass key from his neck.

Placed it on the table.

“I’m finished.”

Nicholas looked at him.

“With what?”

“Your family.”

That hurt more than expected.

Arthur continued:

“I will testify.”

“Against?”

“Myself where necessary.”

Financial laundering.

Evidence manipulation.

False identity structures.

Obstruction.

Whatever prosecutors could prove.

Nicholas frowned.

“You could negotiate.”

“I will.”

Good.

Not martyrdom.

Accountability.

Then Maria asked:

“What about Evelyn?”

Everyone looked toward the screen.

Still missing.

The extraction contracts had gone dark after Mercer protocol termination.

One last medical transport invoice appeared before shutdown.

Destination:

Boston.

Same city as Anna.

Nicholas looked at the blank screen where his sister had participated.

Anna had not mentioned Evelyn being nearby.

Maybe she did not know.

Maybe she did.

Nicholas did not call her.

Not yet.

Boundary.

Then Alexandra entered.

“We have a problem.”

Of course.

Evelyn had surfaced.

Not in Boston.

At Kennedy Airport.

Walking.

Alone.

No guards.

She approached a federal inspection desk and surrendered.

Nicholas stared.

“Why?”

Alexandra handed him a note Evelyn carried.
