Chapter 3 - THE BLUE FOLDER

Maria stared at Nicholas as though he had spoken the wrong language.

“Santos?”

“Yes.”

“My Santos?”

“I don't know.”

She folded her arms.

They were in the library the next morning.

Lucy slept upstairs after waking three times during the night.

Vivienne had left the estate voluntarily after Nicholas informed her the engagement was paused and that she was not to contact Maria or Lucy directly.

She did not scream.

That worried Nicholas more.

She left through the front door carrying only her purse.

No ring returned.

Not yet.

Now the missing folder.

Maria shook her head.

“I never knew your mother.”

Arthur spoke from near the fireplace.

“You met her once.”

Maria looked at him.

“No.”

“You were nineteen.”

Her expression changed.

Arthur continued:

“You came with your husband.”

“Daniel?”

“Yes.”

Maria’s face drained.

Nicholas noticed.

“My husband knew Isabella Caruso?”

Arthur nodded.

Maria sat.

Daniel Santos had died four years earlier.

Car accident.

Maria had been five months pregnant with Lucy.

She rarely discussed him at work.

Nicholas knew only that much.

“What did Daniel do?”

“For a living?”

“Yes.”

“Forensic accounting.”

Nicholas looked at Arthur.

The old butler nodded.

Of course.

Not random.

Maria continued:

“He worked contract audits. Foundations. Medical charities. Infrastructure nonprofits.”

“Did he work for my family?”

“I didn't think so.”

Arthur answered:

“Indirectly.”

Nicholas’s mother had operated the Isabella Caruso Children’s Relief Fund.

For twenty years it financed pediatric rehabilitation, housing for families traveling for treatment, and emergency grants for domestic staff across Caruso legitimate businesses.

After Isabella developed cancer, she hired outside auditors to review the fund before transferring governance.

Daniel Santos was one.

Maria’s eyes filled with old confusion.

“He told me he had one client that scared him.”

Nicholas looked at her.

“Did he name it?”

“No.”

“He brought you here.”

“I remember a big house.”

She looked around the library.

“But not this room. We came through a side entrance. I waited in a sitting area maybe twenty minutes.”

Arthur nodded.

“Mrs. Caruso met with Daniel privately.”

When?

Nine years ago.

Maria and Daniel were newly married.

Lucy not born.

Vivienne?

Her family entered the story through the fund’s largest corporate partner:

Hartwell Medical Foundation.

Created by Malcolm Hart.

Vivienne’s father.

Nicholas felt cold.

“How long has Hart money been mixed with Caruso relief funds?”

Arthur answered:

“Twenty-two years.”

Nicholas knew the families were financially intertwined through hospitals, medical real estate, and charitable projects.

He had never studied his mother’s small relief fund.

Why would he?

That question now embarrassed him.

Maria whispered:

“Daniel audited the Harts?”

Arthur did not know details.

Only Isabella’s instructions.

She gave Arthur the blue folder after Daniel’s final meeting.

“If anyone ever asks for this by Daniel Santos’s name, give it only to Nicholas.”

No one asked.

Isabella died six months later.

Daniel died four years after that.

The folder remained.

Until last night.

Nicholas called Maya Chen, an outside attorney specializing in internal investigations.

Not a Moretti story.

Different Maya? Could use different name to avoid same recurring. Let's use Alexandra Pierce.

Alexandra Pierce arrived at noon.

Former state prosecutor.

No Caruso retainer before now.

Nicholas explained.

She immediately said:

“Do not search Vivienne’s belongings yourself.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

He stared.

She continued:

“If you think she took a file, preserve footage, send formal notice, and let her counsel respond.”

“Fine.”

“Do not threaten her.”

“I wasn't planning—”

Alexandra raised one eyebrow.

Nicholas stopped.

“Fine.”

Maria almost smiled.

Then her own belongings.

If Vivienne had targeted Maria before the breakfast-room incident, what was she looking for?

Maria returned to staff apartment with Alexandra present.

Nothing obviously disturbed.

Drawer slightly open.

Closet.

Lucy’s toys.

Daniel’s old toolbox.

Maria froze.

“What?”

“The box.”

Metal toolbox.

Gray.

Old.

She opened it.

Photographs.

Two screwdrivers.

A folded mechanic-style cloth though Daniel had been an accountant.

Then an empty foam slot.

Maria touched it.

“There was a flash drive.”

Nicholas looked at her.

“What was on it?”

“I don't know.”

“You kept a drive for four years and never opened it?”

“I tried.”

Encrypted.

Daniel told her:

“If anything happens, keep it. Don’t plug it into anything you care about.”

Then he died in a traffic collision.

Maria was pregnant.

Grieving.

She tried once on an old laptop.

Password prompt.

She put it back.

Forgot.

Or tried to.

“Who knew?”

“No one.”

“Vivienne?”

Maria shook her head.

Then stopped.

“Maybe.”

“How?”

Two weeks earlier Vivienne had entered staff apartment while Maria was working.

Reason:

looking for a missing pair of earrings after fittings.

Maria had found her near the toolbox.

Vivienne said she knocked it accidentally.

Maria thought nothing.

Now?

Different.

Alexandra asked:

“When did you last physically see the drive?”

Not enough to accuse.

Then Lucy woke and wandered into the doorway holding Mr. Buttons.

“Mommy.”

Maria immediately opened her arms.

Lucy climbed into her lap.

Nicholas remained across the room.

The child looked at him.

“Uncle Nicholas.”

“Yes?”

“The pretty lady wanted paper.”

Every adult went still.

Alexandra crouched.

No leading.

“What paper?”

Lucy pointed toward Maria’s desk.

“Blue.”

Nicholas’s pulse changed.

Could a three-year-old confuse things?

Absolutely.

So Alexandra did not ask:

Did Vivienne take the blue folder?

She asked:

“What happened to the blue paper?”

Lucy frowned.

“I dunno.”

“Where did you see it?”

“The cookie room.”

That was all.

Enough to document.

Not enough to prove.

Then Lucy added:

“She said give it.”

“Who?”

“The pretty lady.”

“What did you do?”

Lucy hugged the rabbit.

“I said no.”

“Why?”

“Mr. Bunny was sitting on it.”

Nicholas looked at Maria.

Maria looked at Arthur.

A blue folder had been on the breakfast-room floor or furniture.

Lucy encountered it.

Vivienne wanted it.

Then grabbed her wrist.

The cookie may have been incidental.

Alexandra stood.

“This is now potentially evidence tampering plus child injury.”

Nicholas’s expression became cold.

Maria whispered:

“What was Daniel investigating?”

Arthur looked toward the dead woman’s old room.

May you like

Then answered:

“Something Mrs. Caruso believed could destroy two families if it was handled badly.”
