Chapter 11 - ARTHUR BELL’S WIFE

Nicholas stood.

Arthur remained seated.

“You were married to my father’s sister.”

“Yes.”

“How long were you planning to omit that?”

“Possibly until I died.”

Nicholas laughed once.

Angry.

“That seems to be everyone’s favorite strategy.”

Arthur accepted it.

Elise Caruso left the family at nineteen after a violent confrontation with Anthony.

Not physical violence between siblings?

Anthony threatened the man she loved.

Arthur.

Then twenty-one.

Junior household steward from a working-class family.

Anthony believed Arthur was using Elise for status.

Elise believed Anthony wanted control.

She left.

Married Arthur privately.

Changed surname.

Anthony cut her out.

Their marriage lasted seventeen years.

Then?

Elise died from breast cancer.

Arthur returned to Caruso employment partly because Isabella asked him.

Nicholas stared.

“You worked in the house after your wife died and never told me she was my aunt.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Elise made me promise.”

Of course.

Why?

She did not want her children drawn into the Caruso world.

Children?

Nicholas’s expression changed.

“One daughter.”

Name:

Caroline Bell.

Current age forty-six.

Lives in Vermont.

Professor of environmental law.

No Caruso relationship by choice.

Did Anthony know?

Yes.

Never met her.

Isabella did.

Granite Harbor payments supported Elise’s medical care, then Caroline’s education.

Why from relief fund?

Administrative laziness initially.

Isabella reimbursed annually from personal funds.

After her death, automatic transfers continued without matching reimbursements.

That created the unexplained $1.6 million.

Not embezzlement for profit.

Still bad governance.

Daniel had identified it.

Did Arthur know?

Partly.

He assumed Isabella’s personal trust funded it.

When Daniel asked about Granite, Arthur told Isabella privately.

She planned to correct structure.

Cancer worsened.

Never completed.

Again.

No mastermind.

Just secrets outliving the reasons for them.

Then Caroline.

Did she want contact?

Arthur had respected distance.

They spoke once yearly.

Nicholas said:

“You have a daughter.”

“Yes.”

“And you spend Christmas serving my table.”

Arthur looked at him.

“My daughter has a life she chose.”

That mattered.

“She doesn't owe me holidays because I’m old.”

Nicholas sat.

“You could have had time with her.”

“I did.”

Different kind.

Not tragedy.

Choice.

Then why was Arthur disturbed by Vivienne before Nicholas arrived?

Because when Vivienne entered Isabella’s breakfast room, Arthur knew the blue Santos folder and old Granite correspondence were there.

He saw history repeating:

A powerful family trying to control evidence before truth.

He froze.

Regretted not intervening sooner.

“I should have stopped her before Lucy was hurt.”

Nicholas shook his head.

“You are seventy.”

Arthur raised eyebrow.

“And?”

Nicholas almost smiled.

“You were not responsible for Vivienne’s hand.”

Arthur nodded slowly.

Same lesson Maria had made Nicholas learn.

Then Caroline’s view.

She declined meeting Nicholas initially.

Sent email:

I have spent forty-six years not being a Caruso. I would like to continue.

Nicholas replied:

Understood.

No persuasion.

A month later she sent:

Arthur says you’re less terrible than Anthony.

Nicholas replied:

Low bar.

Caroline:

Agreed.

That became the beginning.

Then Hart restitution.

Malcolm Hart agreed to civil settlement:

Repay improper transfers with interest.

Relinquish foundation chair.

Independent governance.

Potential criminal charges still under review.

Vivienne funded no settlement from Lucy or Nicholas.

Her own board role ended.

She later pleaded to a misdemeanor? Could keep legal outcome measured: prosecutors charged her with misdemeanor endangering welfare? In NY grabbing wrist maybe not necessarily criminal. Let's say she accepted a noncriminal protective order and completed a diversion agreement after prosecutor consultation? But user wants consequences. Could be charged with attempted coercion? Search of employee apartment without consent could be trespass if access unauthorized. Let's say DA filed misdemeanor harassment and unlawful eviction-related charges? Need not be legally precise. Better say "local prosecutors declined felony treatment but pursued misdemeanor child endangerment/harassment; case resolved with supervised diversion, no-contact, community service, parenting/anger program." She's not a parent though. Could be okay. Let's avoid over-specific legal outcome.

Vivienne entered a court-supervised diversion agreement on the minor-contact charge after Maria consented to resolution? Prosecutor decides, not Maria. Include restitution for Maria's damaged privacy? She settled civil employment claim separately through independent counsel.

Nicholas did not pay it.

Hart did not make Maria sign NDA.

Good.

Then Nicholas finally asked Maria to dinner.

Trust litigation mostly resolved.

She said:

“No.”

He nodded.

Then she added:

“Ask me in a month.”

May you like

He did.

She said yes.
