Chapter 51 - THE AQUEDUCT RUN

The descent into the darkness was a test of raw endurance. Isabella whimpered with every rung, her broken arm swinging uselessly, her weight occasionally sagging against the harness and jerking Nicholas toward the void. Beneath them, Evelyn climbed with an eerie, mechanical precision, her breath steady, completely unfazed by the darkness or the icy spray rising from the depths.

When Nicholas’s boots finally hit the bottom, he sank calf-deep into rushing, freezing water.

The aqueduct was an arched tunnel of Victorian brick, built during the expansion of the Manhattan water system and abandoned for half a century. The current was swift, dragging river silt and debris south toward the harbor.

Nicholas unclipped a waterproof tactical light from his vest, slicing the gloom with a sharp, three-thousand-lumen beam.

"Which way?" Isabella gasped, shivering violently, her teeth chattering so hard she could barely articulate the words.

"South leads to the active storm outflow," Nicholas said, pointing the beam down the tunnel where the water rushed faster. "We’d be ground into pulp against the flood retention grates. We go north. Against the current. Arthur mapped a dry drainage junction two hundred yards toward St. Jude’s."

"You're walking into an ambush, Nicholas," Evelyn said from the darkness. She stood knee-deep in the black water, her coat soaked and heavy, but her spine remained completely straight. "My strike team didn't just breach the estate perimeter. They surrounded St. Jude’s twenty minutes ago. By now, Daniel Santos has been eliminated, and your men are either dead or disarmed."

Nicholas turned the tactical light directly into her face. The glare was blinding, but she didn't flinch.

"My men aren't mercenaries, Evelyn," Nicholas said, his voice hard as iron. "They're men whose families I've protected for fifteen years. They don't surrender. And Daniel Santos isn't at St. Jude’s alone."

"Who else is there?" Isabella asked, terror creeping back into her voice. "Nicholas, who did you leave with the girl?"

Nicholas didn't answer. He gripped Evelyn’s shoulder and pushed her forward into the rushing water. "Keep moving."

They trudged against the freezing flow, the water fighting their legs with every step. The brick ceiling dripped continuously, sending frigid needles of water down their necks. Nicholas kept his Kimber gripped securely in his right hand, wrapped in a waterproof tactical seal, his senses straining for any sound above the roar of the subterranean current.

After a hundred yards, the tunnel split into two smaller culverts.

At the intersection, half-submerged in the mud, lay the body of a man in black tactical gear.

Nicholas froze, raising his weapon. He stepped around Evelyn, moving silently through the water until his beam illuminated the corpse. The man was wearing a high-cut ballistic helmet, night-vision goggles flipped upward, and an insignia patch on his chest: an ouroboros—a snake eating its own tail.

Evelyn’s private crest.

The man had not been shot. His neck had been cleanly snapped from behind, the vertebra displaced with surgical violence.

"That wasn't Daniel Santos," Isabella whispered, staring at the dead commando. "Daniel doesn't know how to do that."

"No," Nicholas agreed quietly, his eyes tracking fresh combat boot prints on the muddy ledge above the water line. "It wasn't Daniel."

"Then who is in that sanctuary?" Evelyn asked, the first genuine crack of uncertainty appearing in her voice.

Nicholas looked back at her, his eyes cold and unforgiving in the tactical light. "The man who raised me after you ran away."
