Chapter 60 - THE TARRYTOWN INSTITUTE

The Mercer Institute looked abandoned.

It was not.

Federal utility records showed power consumption.

Low.

Constant.

No employees registered.

No patients.

The front doors opened with a warrant.

Nicholas entered behind federal agents.

Not first.

That took effort.

Arthur came as technical witness.

Rose joined remotely.

Daniel stayed with Maria and Lucy.

The building smelled like disinfectant and dust.

No armed guards.

No hidden children.

No hospital beds.

Mostly server racks.

Climate control.

Medical archival equipment.

Arthur whispered:

“The Nursery.”

Nicholas hated that he was right.

Room A:

Caruso family pathology records.

Victor.

Evelyn.

Nicholas.

Anthony? Historical duplicates from earlier generation.

Rose.

Daniel listed as possible descendant.

No Lucy sample.

Good.

Room B:

Trust authentication equipment.

Old.

Updated repeatedly.

Room C:

Photographs.

Not surveillance.

Identity-verification photos.

Passport.

Driver license.

Probate images.

Still invasive.

Then one file:

NICHOLAS CARUSO / ROOT ONE.

First page:

1991 neonatal heel-stick scan.

Nicholas stared at the tiny footprint.

His own.

He felt nothing at first.

Then anger.

Not because the image was frightening.

Because somebody had decided an infant’s body could become infrastructure.

He closed the file.

“Take it.”

Federal evidence technician nodded.

No burning.

No dramatic destruction.

Process.

Then Arthur found Evelyn’s relay log.

Most recent:

Thirty-six hours earlier.

STATUS:

PATIENT RECOVERED.

TRANSFER SUCCESSFUL.

Patient.

Evelyn alive.

Destination code:

NINE.

Rose’s voice came through secure earpiece.

“Nine what?”

Arthur did not know.

Then another entry.

ARCHITECT SESSION.

Live.

Three minutes earlier.

Nicholas looked at the monitor.

Someone knew they were inside.

Message appeared:

ROOT ONE CONFIRMED ON SITE.

Federal agents immediately moved Nicholas back.

Good.

He did not resist.

Then:

WELCOME HOME, NICHOLAS.

He stared.

A second message.

YOUR MOTHER IS ALIVE.

Third:

SHE HAS ASKED TO SPEAK WITH YOU.

Nicholas did not touch the keyboard.

An agent did.

No response sent.

Then a video feed appeared automatically.

Evelyn.

Hospital bed.

Bandaged temple.

Burns along one cheek.

Alive.

She stared into camera.

“Nicholas.”

He said nothing.

She continued.

“He lied to me.”

“Who?”

Her face twisted.

“Elias.”

There.

“Is he alive?”

Evelyn began laughing.

Then crying.

“I don’t know.”

Nicholas frowned.

She whispered:

“That is the trick.”

“What?”

“Elias made himself unnecessary.”

Behind her, no person.

Only machines.

Automated monitors.

A speaker.

Then Evelyn said:

“The Architect isn’t a man anymore.”

Arthur went still.

Rose whispered:

“No.”

Evelyn looked directly into the camera.

“Mercer died in 2016.”

Silence.

Nicholas stared.

“Then who extracted you?”

“The system he left behind.”

Automated instructions.

Contractors.

Trustees.

Medical vendors.

People following authenticated orders.

No mastermind.

May you like

A dead man’s architecture still moving living people.

That was somehow worse.
