Chapter 62 - THE SECOND ROOT

Nicholas laughed.
Not amusement.
The exhausted laugh of a man whose family tree had become a criminal filing cabinet.
“I already have Rose.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“Not Rose.”
“Then who?”
Silence.
Nicholas’s voice lowered.
“Mother.”
Evelyn flinched at the word.
Then:
“Her name was Anna.”
Born 1994.
Nicholas was three.
Evelyn and Victor still married.
But Victor was not Anna’s father.
Elias Mercer was.
The room went silent.
Arthur looked physically ill.
“You had a child with Mercer while still married to Victor.”
“Yes.”
“Did Victor know?”
“No.”
“What happened?”
Evelyn cried.
For the first time without calculation.
“At seven months I tried to leave.”
Victor discovered the pregnancy.
Not paternity.
Only that Evelyn planned to disappear.
Mercer helped.
Anna was delivered early under St. Jude protection.
No public Caruso record.
Mercer created Root Two using the infant’s specimen.
Why?
Insurance.
If Nicholas died or Victor seized him, Anna could authenticate Evelyn’s offshore structures.
Another child turned into contingency.
“What happened to her?”
Evelyn looked at Arthur.
“I thought you knew.”
Arthur shook his head.
“No.”
Mercer removed Anna from New York.
Adoption.
Private.
Evelyn saw her twice.
Then never again.
Why?
Mercer said distance kept her safe.
Evelyn accepted that.
The irony sat heavily.
The woman who manipulated everyone had surrendered her own daughter to the same system.
Nicholas asked:
“Alive?”
“I don’t know.”
The monitor answered.
ROOT TWO LIVE STATUS:
ACTIVE.
Recent biometric verification:
Six weeks ago.
Somewhere, Anna existed.
Thirty-two years old.
And Mercer’s dead protocol had verified her.
Federal investigators searched lawful records tied to Root Two.
No name.
One medical insurer.
One university health system.
One current geography.
Boston.
Maria learned through Nicholas later that evening.
She listened.
Then:
“Does this involve Lucy?”
“Not anymore if the injunction holds.”
“Not good enough.”
“No.”
He agreed.
Maria looked at Daniel.
Daniel looked tired.
Another half-sibling somewhere.
Maybe.
But not his problem automatically.
Nicholas said:
“I’m not going to search for Anna privately.”
Maria studied him.
“Why?”
“Because if she has lived thirty-two years without Caruso involvement, I don’t get to arrive with men and a blood test.”
Good.
Daniel nodded.
Rose said the same.
Contact through neutral counsel only if investigators needed her to terminate the system.
Then federal technicians found Root Two had already sent one instruction.
Before isolation.
Destination:
Boston.
Content encrypted.
Recipient:
ANNA M.
Nicholas stared.
Initial.
M.
Mercer?
Maybe.
The message timestamp:
The exact minute Evelyn’s transport exploded.
May you like
Whatever Root Two was—
Anna had been alerted before Nicholas knew she existed.
