Chapter 7 - The Federal Indictment And The Fall From Grace

The federal courthouse in downtown Chicago was besieged by reporters and broadcast crews broadcasting live around the clock.
The grand double doors swung open,
and Flynn Vance was escorted down the marble steps in full federal custody.
His designer suit was gone,
replaced by standard orange jumpsuit trousers and a heavy steel belly chain binding his wrists.
His hair,
usually impeccably styled,
was messy and graying at the temples,
his face hollowed out by days of sleepless despair.
“Mr.
Vance! Mr.
Vance! Is it true that your wife filed for a total divorce and asset seizure?” shouted a reporter.
“Mr.
Vance,
do you have any comment on the federal embezzlement charges filed by Apex-Vance Holdings?” yelled another.
Flynn kept his head down,
blinded by camera flashes as marshals shoved him into the back of a secure transport van.
Inside holding cell number four,
Flynn sat on a steel bench,
staring at his calloused hands that had once signed multi-million-dollar deals.
His phone privileges had been revoked,
his corporate credit cards frozen,
and his personal bank accounts reduced to zero balance.
Even his high-priced defense attorney had withdrawn from the case that morning after realizing there were no funds left to pay his retainer.
The cell door buzzed open,
and a prison guard tossed a plastic tray containing lukewarm meatloaf onto the concrete floor.
“Eat up,
CEO,
” the guard mocked with a harsh chuckle.
“Your luxury penthouse days are officially history.
” Flynn didn't touch the food,
sinking his head into his hands as the horrifying reality of his destruction finally crushed him.
He had sacrificed his marriage,
his unborn children,
and his entire empire for a lying,
manipulative woman who sold him out in a heartbeat.
“Selina…” Flynn whispered into the empty darkness of his cell,
a bitter sob tearing through his throat.
Meanwhile,
across the city in her lakeside sanctuary,
Mabel Vance sat by the floor-to-ceiling windows watching the rain fall over Lake Michigan.
Her brother Julian walked into the room,
holding a freshly printed copy of the federal indictment and asset liquidation order.
“It's done,
Mabel,
” Julian announced,
placing the document gently on the coffee table.
“Flynn's bail has been denied as a flight risk,
his assets are completely frozen,
and the federal prosecutor is pushing for twenty years.
” Mabel looked at the document,
feeling neither joy nor sorrow,
only the profound stillness of absolute justice being served.
“And Selina?” Mabel asked quietly.
“Selina's cooperation agreement only saved her from federal prison,
but she faces state fraud charges and total financial ruin,
” Julian replied.
“She has no money,
no friends,
and no social standing left in Chicago.
” Mabel nodded slowly,
taking a sip of her tea as she looked out at the horizon where the storm clouds were finally beginning to clear.
“Let her rot in obscurity,
Julian,
” Mabel said softly.

“My real life is only just beginning.
