Chapter 16 - Echoes From A Distant Cell

Deep within the concrete bowels of federal prison,

Flynn Vance spent his days doing hard labor in the facility laundry room.

His hands were calloused and blistered,

his tailored suits replaced by coarse denim and cotton prison issue.

He rarely spoke to anyone,

retreating into a shell of permanent regret and haunting memories of what he had destroyed.

Every night in his narrow bunk,

he replayed that fateful afternoon when he raised a knife against his innocent wife.

He remembered the look in Mabel's eyes before she collapsed,

an expression of absolute betrayal that would haunt him until his dying breath.

He had everything a man could ever dream of: power,

wealth,

and a brilliant,

devoted wife who truly loved him.

And he had thrown it all away in thirty seconds of blind rage for a lying,

manipulative parasite who betrayed him without hesitation.

A guard walked past his cell,

tapping a nightstick against the steel bars with a loud,

echoing clatter.

“Mail call,

Vance,

” the guard grunted,

tossing a small brown envelope onto the concrete floor.

Flynn picked it up slowly,

his fingers trembling as he read the return address: *Apex-Vance Legal Department.

* He tore open the envelope,

pulling out a single sheet of official legal paper bearing the final divorce decree.

At the bottom,

Mabel's signature was clean,

elegant,

and definitive,

symbolizing the complete eradication of his existence from her life.

Tears spilled over Flynn's weathered cheeks,

soaking the paper as he curled into a tight ball on his narrow mattress.

There was no forgiveness waiting for him,

May you like

no redemption,

and no second chance in this lifetime or any other.
