Chapter 2 - The Threat at the Precipice

Down in the grand foyer,
Sarah,
the loyal family housekeeper,
was busy dusting the antique furniture.
She had served the Davis family for many years,
having promised Leo's late mother that she would always look after the young boy.
Sarah was a hardworking,
kind-hearted woman,
but she was also fiercely protective of those she loved.
As she wiped down a wooden table,
she heard the faint,
harsh sound of shouting coming from the upper floor.
She paused,
her heart tightening with an immediate sense of foreboding.
She dropped her feather duster onto the marble floor without a second thought,
her instincts screaming that Leo was in grave danger.
Sarah ran toward the main hallway immediately,
her shoes slapping loudly against the polished stone floor.
She reached the base of the grand staircase,
looked up,
and gasped in absolute horror.
At the top landing,
Victoria was aggressively pulling the frightened boy toward the dangerous edge of the stairs.
Leo was sobbing hysterically,
his tiny feet struggling to find purchase on the slick floor.
Sarah: Leave him alone right now,
Victoria!
Victoria turned her head slightly,
glaring down at Sarah with pure disdain and arrogance.
Victoria: Mind your own business,
you pathetic maid,
and get out of my way!
Sarah: Put the boy down immediately,
or so help me,
you will regret this!
Victoria ignored Sarah's desperate warning completely.
She tightened her hold on Leo's shoulder,
her knuckles turning white with force.
With a sudden,
vicious motion,
she pulled him right to the very edge of the top step.
Leo stumbled backward,
his small shoes slipping off the polished wood.
He lost his balance completely near the steep drop,
his arms flailing wildly in the empty air.
He looked down at the long flight of hard marble steps below him,
paralyzed by sheer terror.
Leo: Help me,
Sarah,
please help me!
The boy's scream echoed through the massive,
cavernous house,
filled with pure panic.
Sarah sprinted across the polished marble floor with incredible speed,
her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
She knew she only had a few seconds to prevent a terrible,
lifeless tragedy.
Every second felt like an eternity as she surged forward,
ignoring the pain in her own legs.
Victoria watched cold-heartedly as the helpless child struggled helplessly on the top step.
She did not reach out her hand to assist the slipping boy at all,
nor did she show a shred of panic or remorse.
Instead,
she stood there upright,
a bitter,
twisted sneer painted across her face.
She genuinely hoped the fall would end the child's life once and for all.
Leo's foot slipped completely off the top landing.
He began falling backward,
gravity pulling him down toward the unforgiving marble steps below.
His cries cut through the air,
a heart-wrenching sound of an innocent child facing destruction.

Sarah pushed her body beyond its absolute limits,
leaping toward the stairs as fast as she humanly could.
