Chapter 8 - Shadows in the Dark Court

By the following morning,

the heavy rain had stopped,

leaving behind a gray,

misty sky that hung low over the vast estate.

Inside the formal study of Davis Manor,

Richard sat behind his heavy mahogany desk,

his face lined with exhaustion and deep stress.

Across from him sat Arthur Pendelton,

the Davis family's senior legal counsel,

a sharp-minded attorney who had represented the family business for over thirty years.

Arthur adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses,

looking over a stack of legal documents and police reports with a grim expression.

Arthur: Richard,

I have reviewed the preliminary police filing and the security video footage you forwarded to my office last night.

The evidence against Victoria is overwhelming on the charge of attempted child endangerment.

However,

you must prepare yourself for an extremely dirty,

vicious legal battle.

Richard leaned forward,

his knuckles turning white as he clenched his fists on the desk.

Richard: What do you mean,

Arthur?

She was caught on clear,

high-definition video trying to throw my son down a flight of marble stairs!

What defense could she possibly have?

Arthur sighed deeply,

setting down his pen with a heavy click.

Arthur: I received a call an hour ago from Marcus Thorne.

Victoria's family has retained him as her lead defense attorney.

Thorne is notorious in this city for using every underhanded,

unethical tactic in the book to free high-profile criminals.

He is already preparing a public statement claiming that the security video was fabricated using advanced artificial intelligence deepfake technology.

He intends to argue that Sarah engineered the video to frame Victoria out of jealousy and financial spite.

Richard slammed his hand down on the wooden desk with a loud bang,

his eyes blazing with fury.

Richard: That is absolute insanity!

Sarah has worked for us for years,

she almost broke her own back catching Leo!

I will not allow that sleazy lawyer to drag her honorable name through the mud!

Arthur: I know it is outrageous,

Richard,

but that is only the beginning of our troubles.

While investigating Victoria's background last night after her arrest,

my forensic accounting team uncovered something far more sinister.

Arthur opened a thick manila folder and slid several financial bank statements across the mahogany desk toward Richard.

Richard picked up the pages,

his eyes scanning the rows of numbers as a cold sweat broke out across his forehead.

Arthur: Over the past six months,

Victoria has been systematically transferring large sums of money out of your secondary corporate accounts.

She used forged signatures and shell companies registered in offshore tax havens.

So far,

we have tracked over twelve million dollars that have vanished from your firm.

Richard stared at the numbers in sheer disbelief,

his mind reeling from the magnitude of the betrayal.

Richard: Twelve million dollars?

How could she accomplish this without my finance department noticing?

Arthur: She had help from the inside,

Richard.

Her older brother,

Julian Vance,

is a senior partner at the offshore banking firm where the funds were routed.

This was not a sudden act of passion or panic yesterday,

Richard.

Victoria planned everything from the very day she married you.

She was draining your wealth piece by piece,

and getting rid of Leo was the final step in her plan to secure full control over your entire estate.

Richard leaned back in his leather chair,

feeling a chilling shudder run down his spine.

The full horror of his wife's grand scheme was finally coming into clear,

terrifying focus.

Richard: She did not just want my money...

she wanted to destroy my entire family from within.

Arthur: Exactly.

And now that she is trapped behind bars,

her brother Julian will do whatever it takes to protect those stolen millions and destroy the key witnesses before the grand jury trial begins.

We must protect Sarah at all costs,

May you like

Richard,

because she is the living pillar holding this entire criminal case together.
