Chapter 11 - The Weight of Silence

Sarah stood alone in the dark,
damp alley for what felt like an eternity.
The rain fell continuously,
washing away the spilled fruit on the wet cobblestones.
Her entire body trembled with a mixture of cold,
fear,
and absolute helplessness.
The ominous threat against her fragile,
elderly mother echoed in her mind like a terrifying nightmare.
She looked up toward the second-floor window of her mother's apartment.
The soft,
warm light shone through the glass,
representing the only peaceful world she had left.
How could she risk that fragile peace?
How could she allow evil men to harm the woman who had sacrificed everything for her?
Yet,
the image of young Leo's tear-stained face flashed in her heart.
If she stayed silent,
Victoria would walk free from prison.
The wicked stepmother would return to Davis Manor,
and Leo would never be safe again.
Sarah picked up her ruined basket,
her hands cold and stiff.
She forced herself to walk up the creaking wooden stairs to visit her mother.
She put on a fake smile,
suppressing her inner terror so her mother wouldn't notice her bruised jaw and shaking hands.
She spent two hours with her mother,
checking the lock on the door five times,
and making sure the stove was completely turned off.
Every creak in the old building made her heart leap into her throat.
When evening came,
Sarah took a taxi back to the grand Davis estate.
The high iron gates opened slowly,
welcoming her into the vast,
luxurious property.
Inside the house,
everything was quiet and pristine.
Richard was in his private study,
working late into the night on corporate financial documents.
Leo was sound asleep in his bedroom,
clutching a stuffed teddy bear.
Sarah walked into her small staff bedroom,
locked the door tight,
and collapsed onto her bed.
She covered her face with her trembling hands and wept silently.
