Chapter 6 - The Shackles of Justice

The silence in the grand marble foyer was suffocating,
thick with rage,
shock,
and bitter betrayal.
Richard Davis stood frozen in place,
his eyes locked onto his smartphone screen,
where the relentless video played again.
He watched the cruel footage with a heart that felt as though it had been shattered into a thousand jagged pieces.
There,
on the crystal-clear display,
his own wife was dragging his innocent,
defenseless son toward the dangerous edge of the high staircase.
He saw the sheer terror in Leo's eyes,
the malicious sneer on Victoria's face,
and the breathtaking heroism of Sarah as she leaped to save the boy's life.
Every single second of the recording burned into Richard's soul like liquid fire.
His body shook with an uncontrollable mixture of grief,
disbelief,
and boiling fury.
He turned slowly to face Victoria,
his gaze cold enough to freeze the warm summer air.
Richard: How could you do this to my only child?
How could you carry such venom in your heart while pretending to love us?
Victoria's face was completely drained of color,
her fake tears drying instantly into a desperate,
horrified expression.
She took a step backward,
her high heels stumbling slightly on the smooth,
polished marble floor.
Victoria: Richard,
please,
you must listen to me,
you do not understand what really happened!
It is not what it looks like on that stupid camera,
I swear to you!
The video is misleading,
it was an accident,
I was just trying to pull him back from the edge because he was playing dangerously!
Sarah: That is a complete lie!
You grabbed his arm with both hands,
you ignored his screams,
and you intentionally dragged him toward the drop!
I saw it with my own eyes,
and the video shows the absolute truth!
Victoria glared at Sarah with eyes full of poisonous hatred,
her voice shrill and trembling with desperate anger.
Victoria: Shut up,
you pathetic maid!
You altered the footage,
you set a trap for me because you want to destroy my marriage!
Richard: Enough of your disgusting lies,
Victoria!
The camera system is encrypted and streams directly to my personal secure cloud server!
No one could have altered it,
least of all in the few minutes since this happened!
You tried to murder my son in cold blood,
and you thought you could cover it up with your manipulative act!
The two uniformed police officers stepped forward without needing another word from Richard.
They moved with practiced efficiency,
closing the distance between themselves and the panicked woman.
Officer Miller,
the senior officer,
reached for the heavy steel handcuffs hanging from his tactical belt.
Officer Miller: Victoria Davis,
you are under arrest for attempted child endangerment,
aggravated assault,
and reckless endangerment of a minor.
Victoria shrieked in outrage,
flailing her arms wildly as the officers grabbed her wrists.
Victoria: Get your filthy hands off me!
Do you have any idea who I am?
I am the wife of Richard Davis!
I am the mistress of this estate!
You cannot touch me,
you poor,
uneducated fools!
Officer Miller: You have the right to remain silent.
Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.
The metallic sound of the handcuffs clicking closed echoed sharply off the soaring ceiling of the foyer.
Victoria's luxury lifestyle vanished in that single,
devastating second.
Her manicured hands were firmly bound behind her back,
trapping her in steel restraints.
Leo cowered behind Sarah,
clinging tightly to her apron as he watched his cruel stepmother struggle in vain.
Sarah kept her arm around the young boy,
shielding his vision from the ugly sight.
Victoria kicked her legs out,
trying to twist away from the officers' firm grip.
Victoria: Richard!
Are you really going to let them do this to me?
I will ruin you for this!
I will hire the most expensive attorneys in the country and take every single penny you own!
I will destroy you,
do you hear me?
You will regret this day for the rest of your life!
Richard stood tall,
his posture rigid,
his voice dripping with icy contempt.
Richard: The only thing I regret is bringing a viper like you into my home and near my innocent son.
You will never set foot in this house again,
and you will not receive a single cent of my fortune.
Officers,
take her away immediately before I lose my composure.
The two officers escorted the screaming,
struggling woman out through the heavy double oak doors.
Outside,
the rain continued to fall in torrents,
flashing blue and red light reflecting off the wet pavement from the parked police cruiser.
Victoria was pushed into the back seat of the police car,
her desperate screams muffled as the heavy door slammed shut.
The police cruiser pulled away into the stormy afternoon,
carrying the fallen socialite into the cold reality of criminal custody.
Inside the mansion,
the heavy oak doors clicked shut once more,
May you like
bringing a sudden,
profound silence back to the grand foyer.
