Chapter 9 - The Reckoning of Christopher Lawson

Three days later,
the sun rose over San Diego,
casting brilliant golden rays across the city's financial district.
Christopher Lawson sat on a bench outside the federal courthouse,
wearing a cheap,
rumpled suit he had bought with borrowed money.
His face was gaunt,
his eyes hollow,
and his former arrogance had been completely replaced by a crushing sense of defeat.
He watched as a black sedan pulled up to the curb in front of the building.
The door opened,
and Victoria stepped out,
looking radiant and powerful in an elegant cream suit.
She was accompanied by her legal team and two senior vice presidents of Vextor Dynamics.
Reporters and news cameras surrounded her immediately,
flashing lights filling the morning air.
"Ms. Vance!"
a reporter shouted,
holding out a microphone.
"How does it feel to assume full control of Vextor Dynamics after saving it from bankruptcy?"
"Vextor Dynamics has a bright,"
"stable future,"
Victoria answered calmly,
her voice poised and confident.
"We have eliminated all fraudulent liabilities,"
"and we are entering a new era of growth and accountability."
Christopher slowly stood up from the bench,
shuffling toward the crowd like a ghost seeking recognition.
"Victoria..."
he whispered,
his voice swallowed by the noise of the journalists.
As Victoria walked toward the courthouse steps,
she happened to glance across the plaza and saw him standing there.
For a brief moment,
their eyes met.
There was no anger in Victoria's gaze,
no bitterness,
and no hatred.
There was only a deep,
absolute indifference that cut Christopher far deeper than any harsh words ever could.
He was nothing to her now,
just a passing footnote in a story she had already finished writing.
She turned her back on him,
walking up the grand steps into the courthouse surrounded by her team and the flashing cameras.
Moments later,
a police cruiser pulled up behind Christopher's bench,
and two officers stepped out with a warrant in hand.
"Christopher Lawson?"
one officer asked,
checking a legal document.
"You are under arrest for corporate embezzlement,"
"misappropriation of funds,"
"and failure to comply with court-ordered asset freezing."
Christopher did not fight back,
nor did he attempt to argue.
He simply held out his hands,
feeling the cold steel of the handcuffs lock around his wrists.
As he was led into the back of the police car,
he looked up at the top floor of the Vextor Dynamics skyscraper towering over the city.
He remembered the day he had bragged about winning,
the day he had mocked Victoria for choosing her spreadsheets over him.
Now,
he had lost his family,
his fortune,
his freedom,
May you like
and his dignity,
while Victoria stood at the top of the world she had built with her own hands.
