Chapter 5 - The Fall of Vextor Dynamics

Monday morning arrived in San Diego with a dark grey fog rolling in from the Pacific Ocean,
blanketing the gleaming glass skyscrapers in a cold,
damp mist.
The corporate headquarters of Vextor Dynamics stood forty stories high,
a symbol of high-tech innovation and financial power that Christopher Lawson had always claimed as his personal monument.
At seven-thirty in the morning,
Christopher's black sports car screeched into the subterranean parking garage.
He looked terrible;
his suit was wrinkled,
his eyes were heavily bloodshot,
and he had not slept a single hour in the past forty-eight hours.
He rushed toward the executive elevator bay,
pulling his silver security keycard from his pocket and pressing it against the scanner.
A harsh,
red light flashed on the digital reader,
accompanied by a sharp,
unforgiving double beep.
"ACCESS DENIED,"
the automated voice echoed off the concrete walls.
"Invalid credentials."
Christopher slammed his palm against the scanner in a fit of rage.
"What do you mean invalid?"
he shouted at the empty garage.
"I am the CEO of this company!"
"Not anymore,
Mr. Lawson,"
a voice called out from behind him.
Christopher spun around to see two muscular security guards standing near the glass entrance doors,
accompanied by the head of corporate security.
"Your access privileges were revoked by order of the Board of Directors at midnight,"
the security chief stated firmly.
"You are permitted to enter the building only as an observer for the emergency shareholder meeting on the top floor."
"You will be escorted at all times."
Christopher's jaw clenched,
his body shaking with humiliation as the two guards flanked him on either side,
guiding him into the service elevator.
When the elevator doors opened on the fortieth floor,
the atmosphere inside the grand boardroom was thick with tension.
Sitting around the massive oval glass table were the key investors,
the lead corporate attorneys,
and the major shareholding representatives of Vextor Dynamics.
At the far head of the table sat Victoria.
She was dressed in a tailored navy blue suit,
her dark hair pinned back flawlessly,
her eyes calm,
focused,
and completely icy.
She looked like an empress presiding over her court,
exuding an aura of absolute authority that commanded the attention of every person in the room.
Beside her sat Marcus Vance,
along with three senior forensic accountants holding thick leather binders.
"Victoria!"
Christopher yelled,
breaking free from the guards and taking three rapid steps toward the table.
"What is the meaning of this?"
"You can't do this to me!"
"This is my company!"
"I founded Vextor Dynamics!"
Victoria slowly looked up from her tablet,
her expression serene,
unmoved by his emotional outburst.
"Sit down,
Christopher,"
she said,
her voice smooth and low,
yet carrying far more power than his desperate screaming.
"You are embarrassing yourself in front of the board."
"I won't sit down!"
Christopher shouted,
sweat dripping down his temple.
"You manipulated the legal paperwork!"
"You stole my shares!"
Victoria motioned to her attorney,
who pressed a button on the conference system,
projecting a massive financial ledger onto the wall screen behind them.
"Three years ago,"
Victoria began,
addressing the board in a clear,
articulate tone,
"Christopher Lawson signed a personal guaranty contract to secure a forty-million-dollar credit facility for Vextor Dynamics."
"The collateral for that loan was his personal thirty percent stake in this company."
"When Christopher transferred funds out of company operational accounts to finance private real estate purchases in Los Angeles and medical bills in Tucson,"
"he committed a material breach of the fiduciary loan covenants."
"My asset holding company,
Aegis Capital,
purchased the underlying debt contract last month."
"Upon default,"
Victoria continued,
turning her head to look Christopher dead in the eye,
"those voting shares automatically converted to Aegis Capital."
"Combined with my personal equity holdings,"
"I currently hold sixty-one percent of the total voting power of Vextor Dynamics."
A murmur of shock swept through the board members,
though none of them raised an objection.
They had all seen the financial collapse threatening the company under Christopher's chaotic management,
and they knew Victoria was the only reason the business was still solvent.
"The floor is now open for a vote,"
Victoria stated,
her voice ringing out with finality.
"Resolution One: The immediate removal of Christopher Lawson from the position of Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board."
"All in favor?"
Every single hand around the oval table rose into the air,
without a second of hesitation.
"Resolution passed unanimously,"
Victoria declared,
signing the official resolution document with a gold pen.
"Resolution Two: The appointment of Victoria Vance as interim Chief Executive Officer."
Again,
every hand in the room went up immediately.
Christopher felt his knees go weak,
stumbling back against the wall as he watched his empire vanish in less than five minutes.
"You ruined me..."
Christopher whimpered,
his voice trembling with profound disbelief.
"You took my company..."
"you took my life..."
Victoria stood up from her chair,
buttoning her jacket,
and walked slowly toward him.
The security guards stepped back,
allowing her to stand directly in front of her ex-husband.
"You ruined yourself,
Christopher,"
Victoria said,
her voice soft enough that only he could hear her words clearly.
"You threw away a real life for a fantasy constructed by a woman who viewed you as nothing more than an easy target."
"You told me that you had finally found the family I could never give you."
"You told me I would end up alone with my spreadsheets."
Victoria leaned in slightly,
her eyes burning with an intense,
unyielding clarity.
"It turns out,"
she whispered,
"my spreadsheets were the only real thing you ever had."
She turned to the security guards with a subtle nod.
"Escort Mr. Lawson out of the building,"
she commanded coldly.
"If he sets foot on company property again,"
"have him arrested for trespassing."
As the security guards grabbed Christopher's arms and dragged him backward toward the elevator,
he screamed her name,
begging for a second chance,
begging for mercy.
Victoria did not turn around.
She walked back to the head of the boardroom table,
sat down in the CEO's chair,
and opened her next agenda folder.
