Chapter 8 - The Tucson Standoff

The rain poured heavily over the private runway of the Tucson regional airport,
glittering under the harsh floodlights of the perimeter fence.
Inside the private charter terminal,
Raymond Lawson paced back and forth across the carpeted lounge,
his face pale and beaded with sweat.
Michelle sat in a leather armchair nearby,
clutching a designer handbag filled with passports,
bearer bonds,
and expensive jewelry.
The twin infants lay in portable travel cribs beside her,
whimpering softly in the cold,
drafty room.
"Why is the pilot taking so long?"
Michelle snapped,
her voice sharp and filled with rising panic.
"The flight plan was cleared an hour ago!"
"Shut up,
Michelle!"
Raymond barked,
checking his phone for the hundredth time.
"The wire transfer is taking longer than expected to clear the intermediary bank in Panama."
"Once the funds land in Zurich,"
"we board the plane and never look back."
Suddenly,
the heavy glass doors of the terminal burst open with a deafening crash.
A team of federal agents clad in dark tactical gear poured into the room,
weapons raised and flashlights blinding the fleeing pair.
"Federal officers!"
a sharp voice boomed through the hallway.
"Keep your hands where we can see them!"
"Do not move!"
Raymond dropped his phone in shock,
stumbling backward with his hands raised high in the air.
Michelle shrieked in terror,
dropping her handbag as two agents quickly moved in to restrain her.
Behind the tactical team walked Evelyn Lawson,
draped in a dark woolen coat,
her face as unyielding as iron.
Beside Evelyn stood Marcus Vance,
holding a leather folder containing the federal freezing order signed by a federal judge an hour earlier.
"Raymond,"
Evelyn said,
her voice ringing out with supreme authority over the noise of the rain outside.
"Did you really believe you could steal from my family and escape unpunished?"
"Evelyn,
please!"
Raymond stammered,
his confidence collapsing completely.
"It was Michelle's idea!"
"She approached me with the clinic documents!"
"She convinced me to use Julian's samples!"
"Liar!"
Michelle screamed,
struggling against the plastic flex-cuffs binding her wrists.
"You planned the entire wire transfer,
Raymond!"
"You promised me half the trust money if I lied to Christopher!"
Evelyn did not even look at Michelle.
She stepped past the screaming woman and approached the two cribs,
looking down at the innocent infants.
"These children carry Julian's blood,"
Evelyn said quietly,
her tone softening slightly for the first time in days.
"They are victims of your greed,"
"and they will be cared for by the court-appointed estate guardians."
"As for the two of you,"
Evelyn added,
turning her cold gaze back onto Raymond and Michelle,
"you will spend the rest of your lives answering for fraud,"
"conspiracy,"
"and grand larceny."
The federal agents led Raymond and Michelle away in handcuffs,
their desperate arguments echoing down the long,
empty terminal corridor.
Evelyn turned to Marcus Vance,
a quiet look of exhaustion on her weathered face.
"Tell Victoria that the family legacy has been purged,"
May you like
Evelyn said softly.
"And tell her that she was right about everything."
