Chapter 3 - The Confrontation at the Family Table

The grand dining hall of the Lawson estate in Phoenix was stiflingly hot,
despite the air conditioning blasting from the intricate iron vents above.
The heavy oak table,
which had seated generations of wealthy oil barons and real estate tycoons,
was now covered in crisp white paper folders rather than fine china.
Evelyn Lawson sat at the head of the table,
dressed in a sharp black suit that emphasized her frail yet terrifyingly rigid posture.
To her right sat Christopher,
his tie loosened at his collar,
his eyes bloodshot,
and his hands trembling as he stared at the mahogany wood.
Across from him sat Michelle,
her face pale,
her makeup pristine yet unable to mask the sheer terror radiating from her posture.
Two family attorneys sat at the far end of the room,
their faces emotionless as they reviewed stack after stack of certified documents.
"I want an explanation,"
Evelyn began,
her voice ringing through the silent room like a heavy steel blade hitting concrete.
"Mother,
this is ridiculous,"
Christopher protested,
his voice rising in a desperate attempt to regain control of the situation.
"You are letting Victoria's bitter mind games drive you into madness,"
he spat out,
slamming his open hand onto the table.
"Victoria is not here,
Christopher,"
Evelyn retorted coldly,
her eyes narrowing as she looked at her remaining son.
"Victoria does not need to be here,"
"because her receipts are currently sitting right in front of my legal counsel."
Evelyn reached forward,
sliding a thick sheaf of medical papers across the polished wood until they slammed into Christopher's elbow.
"Read them,"
she commanded,
her tone leaving no room for argument.
Christopher snatched the papers up,
his eyes scanning the top pages with frantic speed.
"These are fake,"
he muttered,
though his voice lacked any real conviction.
"They are certified records from the Tucson Reproductive Health Center,"
Evelyn stated,
her voice completely destitute of warmth.
"They detail three separate visits made by Michelle during the months of September and October."
"Visits that were paid for using an offshore account managed by your cousin Raymond."
Christopher slowly turned his head to look at Michelle,
his eyes filled with a mixture of betrayal and wild confusion.
"Michelle?"
he whispered,
his voice cracked and frail.
"What were you doing in Tucson?"
"You told me you were visiting your sister in San Diego during those weeks."
Michelle opened her mouth,
sweat glistening on her forehead beneath the harsh chandelier light.
"Christopher,
darling,
please,"
Michelle pleaded,
reaching out to grasp his sleeve with trembling fingers.
"I did it for us,"
she lied hastily,
her tears flowing freely now down her cheeks.
"You were so stressed about your fertility results,"
"you were so heartbroken every time Victoria failed to conceive."
"I knew how much you wanted a family,"
"how much you needed an heir to prove yourself to your mother."
"So you stole my late son's genetic material?"
Evelyn interrupted,
her voice dropping to a terrifying whisper as she stood up from her chair.
"You conspired with Raymond to bypass the trust restrictions?"
"You brought Julian's children into this house and tried to pass them off as Christopher's?"
"Julian is dead!"
Michelle suddenly screamed,
her composure shattering completely as she snapped under the immense pressure.
"Julian died seven years ago!"
"His trust fund was just sitting there,
worth tens of millions of dollars,"
"wasting away because he had no direct descendants to claim the primary principal!"
The room went dead silent.
Christopher stared at Michelle as if she were a complete stranger who had just broken into his home.
"You..."
Christopher gasped,
stumbling back in his chair as the hideous truth finally settled into his brain.
"You never cared about me,"
he whispered,
the realization cutting through him like a physical blade.
"You used me to get close to the family,"
"you used me to legitimize the pregnancy so no one would ask questions!"
"Oh,
don't act like a saint,
Christopher!"
Michelle sneered,
her sweet persona vanishing completely,
replaced by a venomous,
desperate arrogance.
"You were desperate for an excuse to leave Victoria!"
"You used me to feel like a powerful man because Victoria was smarter,"
"wealthier,"
"and more successful than you could ever dream of being!"
"You needed an ego boost,"
"and I gave you two newborn babies to wave in her face like a trophy!"
Christopher looked as though he had been hit in the chest with a heavy iron bar.
He sank back into his leather chair,
breathing heavily,
his face drained of all color and pride.
"Is it true?"
Christopher asked,
his eyes fixated on the white paper in front of him.
"Am I..."
"am I not their father at all?"
Evelyn signaled to the lead attorney,
who opened a sealed brown envelope that had been sitting near his briefcase.
"The preliminary markers are conclusive,
Mr. Lawson,"
the attorney stated in a matter-of-fact tone.
"The physical traits,
combined with the donor matching logs from Tucson,"
"indicate zero probability that you are the biological father of the male child."
"The female child is currently undergoing secondary testing,"
"but all evidence points to the same origin."
Christopher buried his face in his hands,
a broken,
choking sob escaping his throat.
All the arrogance,
all the boastful statements he had made over the phone to Victoria,
had turned into ashes in his mouth.
He had traded a loyal,
brilliant wife who had built his financial foundation,
for a lying predator who had turned him into the laughingstock of the entire state.
"Get out,"
Evelyn said to Michelle,
her voice cold and final.
"Get out of my house before I have the sheriff arrest you for trust fraud."
"You can't kick me out!"
Michelle shrieked,
standing her ground frantically.
"Those babies are Lawson heirs!"
"They carry Julian's blood!"
"They carry the blood of a traitor and a thief,"
Evelyn declared,
pointing toward the grand mahogany entrance doors.
"And you will not receive a single penny from this family."
"Security!"
Evelyn called out,
and two uniformed guards stepped into the dining hall immediately.
As Michelle was forcibly escorted down the hallway,
screaming curses and threats,
Christopher remained seated at the table,
staring blankly at the empty space where his dream family had been.
Evelyn walked over to her son,
looking down at him with an expression of profound disappointment.
"Victoria tried to save you from yourself,"
Evelyn said softly,
her voice lacking any pity.
"And you threw her away for a illusion."
"Now,"
Evelyn added,
May you like
turning her back on him,
"you will have to face Victoria alone."
