Chapter 14 - The Summit of Fire

The San Francisco International Clean Technology Summit was the premier corporate gathering of the year,
drawing thousands of global executives,
investors,
and international journalists to the grand palace conference hall.
Massive digital screens lined the auditorium walls,
displaying corporate logos and live financial feeds from markets around the world.
At seven-thirty in the evening,
Damien Cross stood near the main stage,
wearing a pristine velvet tuxedo and holding a glass of vintage champagne.
He was surrounded by news reporters and wealthy foreign investors,
basking in the attention as he prepared to deliver his keynote address.
According to the official summit schedule,
Damien was set to announce Apex Global's acquisition of Vextor Dynamics' core clean-energy licensing rights,
a move that would establish him as a dominant titan in the tech industry.
"Mr. Cross!"
a reporter from Bloomberg news called out,
holding a microphone toward him.
"Is it true that Vextor Dynamics is resisting this licensing agreement?"
"Is Ms. Victoria Vance attempting to block your acquisition in court?"
Damien smiled arrogantly,
adjusting his gold cufflinks as he faced the camera.
"Ms. Vance is a talented administrator,"
Damien stated smoothly,
his tone patronizing and dismissive.
"But she lacks the vision required to manage global intellectual property."
"The contract signed by her predecessor is ironclad and legally binding."
"Tonight,"
"Apex Global takes control of the future,"
"and Ms. Vance will simply have to adapt to the new reality."
"I wouldn't be so sure about that,
Damien,"
a cool,
commanding voice echoed from the side entrance of the auditorium.
The crowd of reporters parted immediately as Victoria Vance walked down the red carpet,
looking breathtaking in an emerald green silk gown.
Beside her walked Marcus Vance,
along with two senior federal prosecutors and a team of uniformed United States Marshals.
Damien's smile flickered slightly,
though he maintained his composed,
arrogant demeanor as she approached his group.
"Ah,
Victoria,"
Damien chuckled softly,
stepping forward with his hands in his pockets.
"You came all the way to San Francisco to watch me take your company?"
"You should have signed the surrender papers yesterday,"
"it would have saved you from this embarrassing public defeat."
Victoria stopped three feet away from him,
her face calm,
serene,
and terrifyingly quiet.
"I brought a small gift for you,
Damien,"
Victoria said,
motioning to the large digital display screens behind the main stage.
Marcus Vance pulled a tablet from his briefcase and pressed a single button,
overriding the summit's central multimedia feed.
Suddenly,
the massive auditorium screens switched from corporate logos to a high-definition video recording.
The clear video showed Damien Cross sitting inside a luxury limousine,
handing a stack of hundred-dollar bills and a contract to a nervous Christopher Lawson.
"Sign the emergency charter clause,
Christopher,"
Damien's clear,
recorded voice boomed across the auditorium speakers,
echoing off the high ceilings.
"Once we bankrupt Vextor Dynamics,"
"we will split the patent profits,"
"and Victoria will be left with nothing but worthless paper."
"This video was recorded two weeks before Christopher's arrest,"
"showing clear evidence of corporate extortion,"
"conspiracy,"
"and illegal insider trading."
The entire auditorium went dead silent for two agonizing seconds,
followed by an explosive wave of camera flashes and gasps from the audience.
Damien's face drained of all color,
his champagne glass slipping from his fingers and shattering loudly against the polished floor.
"This is fake!"
Damien shouted,
his British accent cracking with rising panic as he backed away from the reporters.
"This is a manufactured digital forgery!"
"The federal forensic lab verified the encryption signatures two hours ago,
Mr. Cross,"
the lead federal prosecutor stated firmly,
stepping forward with an official arrest warrant in hand.
"Damien Cross,"
the prosecutor announced,
his voice carrying across the entire hall,
"you are under arrest for federal wire fraud,"
"interstate extortion,"
"and conspiracy to commit corporate espionage."
The U.S. Marshals stepped in immediately,
grabbing Damien's arms and pinning him against the edge of the stage as they snapped heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.
Reporters swarmed forward,
camera lights flashing frantically as the powerful billionaire was brought to his knees in front of the global press.
Damien glared up at Victoria with wild,
unfiltered rage in his eyes as he was forced to his feet.
"You ruined me!"
Damien screamed,
his silver hair disheveled and his arrogant composure completely shattered.
"You set a trap for me from the very beginning!"
Victoria looked down at him,
her emerald dress glittering under the stage lights,
her eyes cold and unyielding.
"You made the same mistake Christopher made,
Damien,"
Victoria said softly,
her voice carrying a weight of absolute finality.
"You assumed that because I was quiet,"
"I was weak."
"Enjoy your stay in federal prison."

The marshals dragged Damien Cross out of the auditorium,
his desperate screams echoing down the marble hallway as the press recorded every single second of his downfall.
