Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Mistress

Downstairs in the open-air pavilion of the Halcyon Crown, the tropical rain had begun to fall.
Large, heavy drops battered the broad palm leaves around the terrace.
Vanessa Reed sat alone at a corner table beneath an awning, her mascara running in dark streaks down her cheeks.
Her phone sat dark and dead on the table.
Two private resort security officers stood ten yards away, watching her every move like hawks.
A small mountain of designer luggage was piled near the concierge desk.
Her name was plastered across the luggage tags in gold foil.
The manager of the resort, an impeccably dressed Swiss man named Laurent, walked over to her table holding a leather folio.
“Miss Reed,” Laurent said, his tone icy and polite.
Vanessa looked up with bloodshot eyes.
“Has Ethan called down?” she asked, her voice cracking.
“Is he coming to get me?”
“Mr. Calloway is currently being escorted off the island by private water taxi,” Laurent informed her flatly.
Vanessa’s heart seized.
“What?” she gasped.
“He left me here?”
“He did not leave voluntarily,” Laurent clarified.
“He was removed by order of the resort’s majority equity owners.”
“Which, as of twenty minutes ago, includes Pierce Global Holdings.”
Vanessa clutched her head in her hands, letting out a strangled sob.
“This is a mistake,” she cried.
“I am an executive!”
“I have a suite reserved for the rest of the week!”
“Your suite was billed to a corporate card belonging to Calloway Logistics,” Laurent said, opening his folio.
“That card has been flagged for fraudulent use by the corporate compliance department.”
“The balance remaining on your room, including room service, spa treatments, and the chartered yacht from yesterday, amounts to forty-four thousand eight hundred dollars.”
Vanessa stared at the itemized bill in sheer horror.
“I don't have forty-four thousand dollars!” she screamed.
“Ethan promised he was covering everything!”
“Then I suggest you contact Mr. Calloway immediately,” Laurent said.
“However, the local maritime police have informed us that Mr. Calloway’s personal bank accounts have been subjected to a temporary federal freeze order issued from the Southern District of New York.”
Vanessa felt like she was suffocating.
She remembered the way Ethan had looked at her in the lobby.
The pure, unfiltered hatred in his eyes.
He had blamed her.
He had called her a parasite.
All the sweet promises he had whispered in the dark over the last eight months—the promises of a corner office, a brownstone in Boston, a seat on the executive committee—were nothing but smoke.
He had used her to stroke his fragile ego while his wife was carrying his baby.
And now that the bill had come due, he had thrown her to the wolves without a second thought.
Suddenly, the private elevator doors opened into the pavilion.
Grace Calloway stepped out into the warm, rainy air.
She was surrounded by four private security officers in dark suits, but she walked with complete ease.
Declan Pierce walked beside her, holding a large black umbrella over her head to shield her from the drifting mist.
Vanessa jumped to her feet.
She sprinted across the wet stone toward Grace, ignoring the protests of the resort staff.
“Grace!” Vanessa screamed.
“Grace, please listen to me!”
The security guards instantly formed an impenetrable wall in front of Grace, their hands resting on their holstered sidearms.
Declan’s jaw set into granite.
“Hold,” Grace commanded softly, raising a single hand.
The guards parted just enough to allow Grace to look at the weeping woman before her.
Vanessa dropped to her knees on the wet pavers, her red silk dress soaking up the dirty rainwater.
“Grace, I am begging you,” Vanessa wept, pressing her hands together in supplication.
“I was an idiot.”
“He lied to me about everything!”
“He told me your marriage had been over for two years!”
“He told me you were living in separate wings of the house!”
“He swore on his life that you were only staying together until the baby was born for tax reasons!”
Grace looked down at the kneeling woman with an expression of profound indifference.
“Did he force you to sign the lease on the Park Avenue apartment, Vanessa?” Grace asked gently.
Vanessa choked on her words.
“Did he force you to accept eighty thousand dollars worth of Cartier jewelry purchased with funds stolen from our supply chain drivers' retirement pool?”
“I didn't know where the money came from!” Vanessa sobbed.
“You are the Vice President of Communications,” Grace noted, her voice steady and implacable.
“You have a master’s degree in corporate finance from Columbia.”
“Do not insult my intelligence by pretending you were an innocent child seduced by an older man.”
“You knew exactly what Ethan was.”
“You knew he was weak.”
“You knew he was vain.”
“And you thought you could use his weakness to climb over my head into the executive suite.”
Vanessa bowed her head until her forehead touched the wet marble.
“Please,” Vanessa whispered.
“They are going to arrest me.”
“The hotel wants forty-four thousand dollars.”
“I have eighty-two dollars in my checking account.”
“My career is over.”
“No firm in New York will ever hire me again.”
Grace turned to Laurent, who was standing nearby.
“Mr. Laurent,” Grace said.
“Yes, Mrs. Calloway?” the manager replied instantly.
“Pay her hotel balance from my personal discretionary account,” Grace ordered.
Vanessa gasped, looking up with sudden, desperate hope shining in her tear-stained eyes.
“Grace... thank you,” Vanessa stammered.
“Thank you so much!”
“Do not thank me, Vanessa,” Grace said coldly, cutting her off instantly.
“I am paying the hotel because I do not want the Halcyon Crown’s reputation tarnished by a public arrest on the terrace.”
“However, the corporate fraud unit in Manhattan will still be filing criminal charges at eight o'clock tomorrow morning.”
“You have twelve hours to find a defense attorney who works on credit.”
“Now get up from the floor.”
“You look pathetic.”
Grace turned away, walking toward the covered walkway that led to the resort’s private helicopter pad.
Declan Pierce kept the umbrella perfectly positioned over her head, his eyes scanning the perimeter with calm vigilance.

Vanessa remained on her knees in the rain, watching the silhouette of the woman she had tried to replace disappear into the night.
