Chapter 20 - The Blood Debt of the Vance Dynasty

The words hit the room like an artillery shell.
Grace pulled Victoria tight against her chest, her knuckles turning white.
"Who is inside the building, Marcus?" Declan demanded, his voice dropping into a deadly, focused roar.
Marcus looked at Grace with eyes filled with agonizing regret.
"Not Julian's people, sir."
"Her people."
Grace gasped.
"My people? My father had no other family!"
Suddenly, the massive glass windows overlooking Manhattan shuddered violently.
The deafening roar of a heavy military-grade Sikorsky helicopter echoed outside, hovering just fifty feet from the eightieth-floor terrace.
Simultaneously, the main power grid of the skyscraper failed.
The fluorescent lights flickered once, twice, and died completely.
The emergency red lights kicked on, bathing the boardroom in an eerie, blood-colored glow.
The digital security panels on the walls began to flash rapidly:
SYSTEM OVERRIDE.
SECURITY CLEARANCE: VANCE SOVEREIGN CIPHER 0-1.
Declan stared at the panel in disbelief.
"That cipher was created thirty years ago by Richard Vance," Declan whispered, his mind racing.
"Only one person beside your father ever possessed that clearance code."
"My mother," Grace breathed, her voice shaking violently.
"My mother died when I was four years old!"
The heavy steel reinforced doors leading to the private executive elevator hissed open.
Heavy tactical boots stepped out into the red-lit hallway.
Four private contractors dressed in unmarked gray body armor moved into the room, their assault rifles raised with terrifying precision.
They did not fire.
They formed a flanking guard along the boardroom perimeter.
Behind them walked a woman.
She wore an immaculate charcoal tailored trench coat and black leather gloves.
Her silver-streaked dark hair was cut into a sharp, architectural bob.
Her face, weathered by decades of living in absolute secrecy, bore an undeniable, terrifying resemblance to Grace.
Her cold, piercing hazel eyes swept across the room, bypassing Declan, bypassing the wounded Marcus, and locking onto Grace.
And more specifically, locking onto the infant in Grace’s arms.
Grace felt the floor drop out beneath her feet.
The breath in her lungs turned to ice.
"Mother...?" Grace choked out, unable to believe the phantom standing before her.
The woman stopped five feet away.
A thin, humorless smile crossed her lips.
"Hello, Grace," the woman said, her voice smooth, chilling, and devoid of maternal warmth.
"You did an exceptional job cleaning up the trash."
"Arthur Calloway was always an incompetent fool, and his son was even worse."
Declan stepped forward, placing his entire body between the woman and Grace, his hand drawing his concealed pistol.
"Take one more step, and I will put a bullet through your heart, regardless of whose mother you claim to be," Declan warned, the gun leveled directly at her forehead.
The woman didn't flinch.
She didn't even look at the barrel of Declan's gun.
"Put the weapon away, Declan Pierce," the woman said calmly.
"You own forty-nine percent of this company because of my husband’s legacy."
"You exist in this boardroom because I permitted your father to invest thirty years ago."
"Eleanor Vance is dead," Grace whispered from behind Declan, tears of horror and shock welling in her eyes.
"My father buried you in Greenwich!"
"Your father buried an empty coffin with a closed lid, Grace," Eleanor Vance replied, her eyes gleaming with cold calculation.
"Richard was weak."
"He wanted to run a legitimate shipping line."
"He didn't have the stomach for the real world of global maritime logistics."
"So I stepped into the shadows."
"I created the offshore syndicate that Arthur Calloway spent twelve years trying to emulate."
Eleanor took half a step forward, her gaze piercing directly through Declan toward the baby.
"I let you dismantle Julian because he was a parasite."
"I let you purge the board because it was corrupt."
"You rebuilt my empire, Grace."
"You consolidated the assets, eliminated the liabilities, and secured fifty-one percent sovereign control."
"And now, my dear daughter..."
Eleanor raised her gloved hand.
Behind her, two more heavily armed contractors stepped forward, leveling their heavy weapons directly at Declan’s chest.
A red laser dot appeared on Declan’s forehead.
Another red laser dot appeared on Grace’s shoulder.
And a third red laser dot danced across the white blanket wrapped around baby Victoria.
"Declan!" Grace screamed in raw terror.

"Now," Eleanor Vance commanded, her voice dropping into a chilling, absolute decree that shook the foundations of the tower, "hand me my granddaughter."
"Or watch every single person in this room die before she takes her next breath."
