Chapter 12 - Bloodlines and Blackmail

The midnight motorcade sped north along the Merritt Parkway through torrential rain.

Declan’s armored Maybach glided silently over the wet asphalt, flanked by two black Cadillac Escalades.

Inside the vehicle, the soft hum of the climate control was the only sound competing with Victoria’s quiet breathing.

Grace sat in the leather captain's chair, watching the raindrops streak across the bulletproof glass.

She had lived through Julian’s infidelity.

She had lived through being abandoned in a hospital wing while carrying a high-risk pregnancy.

She had lived through the humiliation of seeing her husband parade his mistress across the society pages.

She had fought back, stripped Julian of his CEO title, and dissolved his name from the firm.

Yet this new revelation felt like a blade twisting in an old, unhealed wound.

Arthur Calloway had been the patriarch who nearly ruined Grace’s father two decades earlier.

His supposed death in a yacht explosion off the coast of Monaco had closed that chapter of corporate espionage.

Now, it appeared the explosion had been nothing more than an orchestrated disappearance to escape federal indictment.

Declan sat opposite her, his laptop open on the mahogany folding desk.

The blue glow illuminated his sharp cheekbones and the dark circles of sleepless determination under his eyes.

"Arthur never left Europe," Declan reported, his fingers dancing across the encrypted keyboard.

"He’s been living under an alias in Saint-Moritz, managing private accounts for the Sterling Consortium."

"Julian knew," Grace said, her voice bitter as venom.

"Julian knew his father was alive the entire time we were married."

"Julian is a puppet," Declan said without looking up.

"A weak, vain, incompetent puppet."

"His father pulled every string from the shadows."

"Arthur used Julian’s marriage to you as a Trojan horse to infiltrate Vance Maritime Logistics."

"And when Julian ruined the plan by acting impulsively with Evelyn, the old man decided to cut his losses and strike directly at the assets."

Grace looked down at the tiny face of her daughter.

Victoria was the sole legal heir to the Vance bloodline.

If Arthur Calloway successfully registered the debt in an international maritime court, he could freeze the Vance commercial fleet in every international port from Rotterdam to Singapore.

Calloway-Pierce Global would be crippled before its first trading quarter ended.

"Can they enforce the loan?" Grace asked, meeting Declan's gaze.

Declan shut the laptop.

"Under Swiss law, yes, if the original corporate seal of Vance Maritime was affixed to the debt instrument."

"The seal was kept in my father’s private safe at the Greenwich estate," Grace said, her blood running cold.

"The only people who ever had the combination were my father, myself..."

She stopped.

Her eyes widened with horrifying realization.

"Julian," Declan finished for her.

"During the three months you were bedridden during the second trimester."

"Julian spent three weeks alone at the Greenwich estate claiming he was overseeing renovations for the nursery."

Tears of absolute fury burned behind Grace’s eyelids, but she refused to let them fall.

She had sworn on the day Victoria was born that she would never cry over Julian Calloway again.

"He stole my father’s seal while our baby was fighting for her life in my womb," she whispered.

Declan leaned forward, placing his warm, strong hand over hers.

His touch was steady, grounding, and fiercely protective.

"He stole a piece of brass, Grace."

"He did not steal your father’s brilliance, and he did not steal your courage."

"We will reach Greenwich in twenty minutes."

"Marcus has already dispatched a tactical team to sweep the grounds."

Suddenly, the lead Escalade flashed its red brake lights.

The Maybach swerved violently as the driver slammed on the brakes.

Tires screeched against wet pavement.

Grace instinctively leaned over Victoria’s car seat, covering her infant with her own body.

"Report!" Declan barked through the comms system.

"Roadblock ahead, sir!" the lead driver screamed through the radio.

"A downed commercial logging truck across both lanes!"

"It wasn't an accident—there are three unmarked SUVs blocking our rear!"

Declan didn't hesitate for a single second.

He reached beneath his seat and pulled out a heavy black pistol, racking the slide with a clean, lethal metallic click.

"Keep your head down, Grace," Declan commanded softly.

"No one touches my family."
