Chapter 2 - The Paper Empire

The doors of the private elevator closed with a soft, final chime.

Ethan stood frozen in the center of the Halcyon Crown lobby.

Every eye in the grand room was fixed on him.

The bartender was openly staring.

The concierge held a phone to his ear, his gaze darting between Ethan and Vanessa.

Vanessa grabbed Ethan’s jacket sleeve with trembling fingers.

“Ethan, what did she mean?” Vanessa panicked.

“What did she mean I’m fired?”

“You told me you controlled eighty percent of the voting shares!”

“You promised me the board couldn't touch me without your approval!”

Ethan violently shoved her hand away.

“Shut up, Vanessa!” he hissed, his mind spinning into complete chaos.

“Just shut your mouth for one second!”

He reached into his pocket and pulled out his gold-plated smartphone.

His screen was flooded with forty-seven missed calls.

There were thirty-two unread text messages from his chief financial officer, Arthur Vance.

There were ten notifications from the global banking syndicate that held his debt.

His hands shook so violently that he nearly dropped the phone onto the marble floor.

He dialed Arthur Vance’s direct line.

The phone didn't even ring twice before Arthur answered, his voice breathless and frantic.

“Ethan? Where in God's name are you?” Arthur yelled over the receiver.

“I am at the resort,” Ethan snarled.

“Why is Grace here?”

“Why is Declan Pierce walking into my private meetings?”

There was a terrifying silence on the other end of the line.

“Arthur, answer me!” Ethan roared.

“Ethan... it’s over,” Arthur whispered in a broken voice.

“What do you mean it’s over?” Ethan shouted.

“The sovereign notes,” Arthur said, his voice trembling.

“The sixty-million-dollar liquidity bridge you took out last year to finance the European expansion.”

Ethan felt ice water flood his veins.

“What about them?” Ethan asked, his voice suddenly hollow.

“You pledged the family trust assets as collateral,” Arthur explained.

“You signed an addendum stating that if Calloway Logistics failed to maintain a three-to-one debt ratio, the noteholder could force an immediate debt-to-equity conversion.”

“I know what I signed!” Ethan barked.

“The notes are held by an offshore consortium in Geneva!”

“They don't mature for another two years!”

“They matured this morning,” Arthur said.

“Declan Pierce purchased that consortium three weeks ago through an anonymous holding company.”

“He declared an immediate technical default at eight o’clock this morning.”

Ethan felt the room tilt sideways.

“A default? On what grounds?”

“On the grounds of personal embezzlement and breach of fiduciary duty,” Arthur answered, sounding defeated.

“Someone provided Pierce with six hundred pages of internal forensic accounting.”

“Receipts.”

“Offshore wire transfers.”

“The purchase records for the yacht in Monaco.”

“The lease agreement for the penthouse on Park Avenue under Vanessa Reed’s name.”

“All paid for through corporate operational expense accounts.”

Ethan’s vision blurred.

He looked over at Vanessa.

She was frantically tapping on her own phone, tears running down her cheeks.

“My card,” she sobbed.

“My hotel suite card just deactivated.”

“Ethan, my things are locked in the villa!”

Ethan ignored her completely, pressing the phone harder against his ear.

“Arthur, who gave Pierce those files?” Ethan whispered.

“Who had access to the private trust ledgers?”

Arthur let out a dry, tragic laugh.

“Who do you think, Ethan?”

“Grace didn't just inherit her grandfather's wealth.”

“She inherited his mind.”

“She was the sole primary trustee of the original Calloway charter before you ever married her.”

“You thought she was just an ornament who liked gardening and charity galas.”

“She built the system you’ve been stealing from.”

Ethan’s chest tightened until he could barely draw breath.

He remembered Grace sitting at the kitchen island of their Greenwich estate every evening.

She had always seemed quiet.

Gentle.

Complacent.

She would sip herbal tea and smile while he bragged about his corporate victories.

He had believed she was utterly dependent on him.

He had believed she was naive, soft, and easily distracted by high-end jewelry and luxury vacations.

He had treated her like a trophy that had outlived its novelty once her pregnancy made her tired and slow.

“Where are they now?” Ethan asked through gritted teeth.

“The penthouse boardroom on the forty-second floor,” Arthur replied.

“The entire emergency board is present via secure satellite link.”

“Pierce is presenting the restructuring term sheet right now.”

“If they vote to ratify it, Ethan, your shares will be diluted to less than four percent.”

“You will be completely stripped of executive authority.”

Ethan hung up the phone without another word.

He turned toward the elevator.

Vanessa ran after him, grabbing his arm again.

“Ethan, take me with you!” she cried.

“You can’t leave me down here!”

“The staff is looking at me!”

Ethan turned on her, his face contorted with pure hatred.

“Get away from me, you stupid parasite,” he spat, tearing his arm from her grasp.

“You cost me everything.”

Vanessa stumbled back, clutching her chest as if slapped.

Ethan didn't look back.

He sprinted toward the private elevator and jammed his master keycard into the executive slot.

The red light blinked green.

The doors parted.

He stepped inside, his heart pounding a frantic rhythm against his ribs.

He was going to tear those papers out of Grace's hands.

He was going to remind her who built this company.

And he was going to make sure Declan Pierce learned what happened when you tried to take another man's dynasty.
