Chapter 14 - The Fortress in Zurich

Forty-eight hours later, the private jet touched down at Zurich Airport under a heavy gray alpine sky.
A fleet of armored Mercedes sedans was already waiting on the tarmac, their engines running.
Unlike the flashy entrances of Manhattan high society, this was an operation of absolute discretion.
Every vehicle belonged to Pierce Global European Operations—a subsidiary Declan had established five years earlier specifically to counter hostile takeovers by Swiss private banks.
Grace stepped off the jet wearing an elegant charcoal wool coat and dark glasses.
In her arms, Victoria was bundled in white sheepskin, sound asleep.
Beside them walked Declan, his trench coat open, looking every inch the conquering prince of global finance.
They were driven directly to Declan’s private residence in the hills above Lake Zurich—a fortress of glass, steel, and granite hidden behind ten-foot perimeter walls and laser surveillance systems.
Inside the villa, a private pediatrician and a specialized medical team were already waiting to examine Victoria.
Grace stood by the door of the nursery, watching with hawklike intensity as the doctor finished checking Victoria's vitals.
"The baby is in perfect health, Mrs. Calloway," the Swiss physician said politely in fluent English.
"Her lungs are clear, her reflexes are exceptional, and she has suffered no stress from the flight."
Grace let out a long sigh of relief.
"Thank you, Doctor."
She walked over to the crib, adjusted the blanket, and kissed Victoria’s soft cheek.
"I will never let them touch you," she murmured.
She walked out into the main library, where Declan stood before a massive wall of digital monitors displaying financial tickers, corporate registries, and satellite imagery of Saint-Moritz.
A tall, aristocratic man with silver hair and an impeccably tailored navy suit stood beside him.
"Grace, this is Henrik Lindqvist," Declan introduced.
"Henrik was my mentor when I worked in currency arbitrage fifteen years ago."
"He currently holds the controlling seat on the Swiss Federal Banking Commission."
Henrik bowed slightly, offering Grace his hand with immense respect.
"It is an honor, Mrs. Calloway."
"Your late father was a man of extraordinary honor."
"What Arthur Calloway and the Sterling Consortium are attempting to do is not banking; it is piracy."
"Can we prove the loan document is fraudulent, Henrik?" Grace asked, stepping up to the conference table.
Henrik opened a thick red dossier.
"That is the complication, Mrs. Calloway."
"The loan document itself is technically authentic."
"The seal used was indeed the Vance Maritime corporate seal."
"Under Swiss federal law, any document bearing the registered corporate seal of a family maritime enterprise is legally binding unless the bearer can prove the seal was stolen prior to the signing date."
"We reported the theft to the Greenwich police yesterday," Grace stated.
"Julian had access to the safe during his residency."
"A domestic police report filed after the debt default is announced carries little weight in Zurich," Henrik sighed.
"The Consortium’s lawyers will argue you reported the theft solely to escape financial liability."
"Then we don't argue the theft," Declan interrupted, his voice dropping into that predatory, icy tone that preceded an execution.
Grace looked at Declan.
"What are you thinking?"
Declan walked to the center of the room and pressed a button on the remote.
A photograph appeared on the main screen.
It was Julian Calloway.
He was not in Manhattan.
He was sitting in an upscale café on the Bahnhofstrasse in downtown Zurich, looking haggard, desperate, and noticeably thinner.
Sitting across from him was a woman whose face Grace recognized instantly.
Evelyn.
"Julian and Evelyn are here in Zurich?" Grace whispered, her jaw tightening.
"They arrived on a commercial flight from Frankfurt yesterday," Declan said.
"Julian believes his father is going to forgive his failures, hand him his inheritance, and reinstate him into high society."
"Julian doesn't know his father," Grace said with bitter certainty.
"Arthur Calloway has never forgiven a failure in his entire life."
"Exactly," Declan said, a cold smile touching his lips.
"Arthur summoned Julian here for one reason."
"To have him sign the final transfer affidavit confirming that he witnessed Grace Vance authorize the loan."
"Once Julian signs that affidavit, the Swiss court will execute the asset seizure within twenty-four hours."
Grace looked at the photograph of her ex-husband.
The man who had promised to love her until death.
The man who had abandoned her while she carried his child.
The man who had stolen her father’s legacy and offered it to a monster.
"Julian will never sign that affidavit," Grace said, her eyes flashing with diamond-hard resolve.
Declan raised an eyebrow.
"How do you plan to stop him?"
Grace turned to Declan, her posture radiating absolute authority.
May you like
"Because Julian is a coward."
"And I am going to show him what happens when you corner a mother."
