Chapter 15 - The Meeting at the Baur au Lac

The Baur au Lac was Zurich’s most prestigious luxury hotel, a bastion of old-world European wealth where kings, diplomats, and oligarchs conducted their most discreet affairs.
At four o'clock in the afternoon, Julian Calloway sat in the corner booth of the hotel’s private lounge, gripping a glass of scotch with trembling fingers.
He wore an expensive suit, but it hung loosely on his shoulders.
The arrogance that had once defined his stride through the boardrooms of New York was completely gone.
Opposite him sat Evelyn, wearing a mink coat that Julian had bought her months ago with stolen corporate funds.
Her face was drawn, her makeup heavy, trying desperately to conceal the panic in her eyes.
"Your father said three-thirty, Julian," Evelyn hissed, checking her diamond watch.
"It’s four o’clock."
"My father is a busy man, Evelyn," Julian snapped defensively, taking a long swallow of his drink.
"He had to clear customs under an alias."
"When he gets here, he’s going to finalize the paperwork, pay off the debts, and we’ll have our penthouse in Saint-Tropez."
"You promised me twenty million dollars, Julian!" Evelyn spat back.
"Instead, my apartment was raided by the FBI, my bank accounts were frozen by that Pierce bastard, and I had to smuggle my jewelry through customs in my luggage!"
"Shut up!" Julian snarled, his eyes darting nervously around the room.
"Do you want everyone in Zurich to know who we are?"
"They already know who you are, Julian."
A woman's voice cut through the air behind them like a freshly sharpened razor.
Julian froze.
His glass slipped from his fingers, spilling amber liquid across the white linen tablecloth.
He turned his head slowly, his skin turning the color of chalk.
Grace stood above them.
She was wearing a tailored emerald velvet suit that accentuated her regal posture.
Her hair was swept up in an elegant chignon, revealing emerald and diamond earrings that had belonged to her grandmother.
Beside her stood Declan Pierce, towering, menacing, with his hands resting calmly in his pockets.
Behind them, two burly Swiss bodyguards blocked the only exit from the private alcove.
"Grace..." Julian choked out, struggling to stand.
His knees buckled, and he collapsed back into the leather booth.
Evelyn pulled her coat tighter, pressing herself back into the corner as if trying to disappear into the woodwork.
"You look terrible, Julian," Grace said, her voice dripping with cool disdain.
She pulled out a chair from an adjacent table, turned it around, and sat down directly across from them.
Declan remained standing behind her, his shadow enveloping the entire booth.
"What... what are you doing in Switzerland?" Julian stammered, wiping sweat from his forehead with a shaking hand.
"I came to collect a debt," Grace replied smoothly.
"Grace, listen to me," Julian began, his voice breaking into that familiar, pathetic whine he used whenever he was caught in a lie.
"Everything that happened in New York... it was a misunderstanding."
"Evelyn manipulated me."
"She whispered in my ear, she told me Declan was trying to destroy Calloway Holdings—"
"Don't you dare put this on me, you spineless bastard!" Evelyn shrieked, lunging forward across the table.
Declan took one half-step forward.
His cold, unblinking glare pinned Evelyn to her seat instantly.
She shrank back, shivering.
"Julian," Grace said, ignoring the mistress entirely.
"Did you honestly believe your father brought you to Zurich to give you an inheritance?"
Julian blinked, confused.
"My father... my father loves me."
"He built this debt structure to take back what the Vance family stole from him."
"Your father doesn't love anyone, Julian," Grace said, leaning forward.
"Your father is a predator who used you to steal my father’s corporate seal."
"And do you know what he has planned for you once you sign that affidavit this afternoon?"
Julian’s eyes darted between Grace and Declan.
"He’s... he’s going to transfer twenty percent of the consortium's maritime shares to my name."
Declan laughed.
The sound was low, hollow, and chilling.
"Arthur Calloway hasn't transferred a single share to anyone in forty years, Julian," Declan said.
Declan dropped a manila folder onto the table, directly into the puddle of spilled scotch.
Julian looked down.
Through the damp paper, he saw an extradition request filed with the Swiss Federal Police.
"Your father filed a report with Interpol two hours ago," Declan explained with surgical precision.
"He named you as the sole rogue operator who forged the Vance corporate seal and embezzled fifty million dollars from the Sterling Consortium."
Julian’s jaw dropped.
"What... what are you saying?"
"Your father isn't meeting you to save you, Julian," Grace said, her voice dropping into an icy whisper.
"He brought you to Zurich so you could be arrested on Swiss soil."
"Once you are in a Swiss federal penitentiary, you cannot testify."
"The Consortium will claim the maritime assets as a default judgment against a convicted fraudster."
May you like
"You are not the heir, Julian."
"You are the sacrificial lamb."
