Chapter 18 - The Fall of the Patriarch

The click of the steel handcuffs echoed through the grand salon like a death knell.

Two Swiss federal officers pulled Arthur Calloway up from the desk, holding his arms firmly behind his back.

The old patriarch’s silver hair was disheveled, his silk tie crooked, his pale eyes wild with disbelief and fury.

For twelve years, he had operated as an invisible phantom, moving billions through secret numbered accounts, untouchable by American regulators.

In less than ten minutes, his empire had evaporated.

"This is an outrage!" Arthur snarled, struggling against the officers’ grip.

"I am a Swiss citizen! My syndicate controls three percent of the national foreign exchange reserve!"

"Not anymore, Arthur," Henrik Lindqvist said calmly, holding up a tablet.

"Thirty seconds ago, the Swiss Federal Council ratified the emergency freezing order on all Sterling Consortium accounts."

"Declan Pierce provided forty gigabytes of encrypted transaction logs proving your syndicate laundered money for sanctioned entities across three continents."

"Your bank is finished."

Arthur turned his venomous glare toward Grace, who stood quietly beside Declan.

"You think you've won, Grace?" Arthur spat, his teeth bared.

"You're just like your pathetic father."

"You hide behind other men."

"First you hid behind my son, and now you hide behind Pierce!"

Grace walked slowly toward the handcuffed patriarch.

She did not show anger.

She did not raise her voice.

She looked at him with an icy serenity that made the old man’s skin crawl.

"My father built a global shipping empire with his own hands, Arthur," Grace said, each word ringing with lethal clarity.

"He died with a clean conscience and a name respected in every port on earth."

"You faked your own death to avoid an indictment."

"You hid in the mountains like a rat in a hole."

"And in the end, the very son you treated like garbage was the one who handed you to the police."

She leaned in, her voice dropping to a whisper that only Arthur could hear.

"Your name will be struck from every commercial registry in Europe."

"Your assets will be seized to pay off the Vance Maritime defense fund."

"And my daughter will grow up never knowing that your bloodline ever touched her life."

Arthur’s face turned purple with rage.

He lunged forward, trying to spit at her, but the officers yanked him back violently and marched him toward the grand doors.

As he passed Julian, Arthur glared at his son with pure hatred.

"You are no son of mine," Arthur hissed.

Julian stood frozen, staring at the floor, unable to meet his father’s eyes.

"Take him away," Henrik commanded.

The heavy oak doors closed behind Arthur Calloway.

Silence fell over the vast salon.

Julian stood alone near the fireplace, shivering.

He turned toward Grace, his face a mask of pitiful exhaustion.

"Grace... I did it."

"I wore the wire."

"I gave you his confession."

Grace turned her back on him, walking toward the large floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the rain-slicked Limmatquai.

Declan walked over to Julian, reaching into his inner pocket.

He pulled out a manila envelope and a one-way commercial airline ticket.

"Flight 402 to Cleveland, Ohio," Declan said, shoving the envelope into Julian’s chest.

"Departs from Zurich at six o'clock tomorrow morning."

"Inside is five thousand dollars in cash."

"The court order barring you from approaching Grace Vance, Victoria Vance, or any property associated with Calloway-Pierce Global is already filed in the Southern District of New York."

Julian took the envelope with shaking fingers.

"Five thousand dollars?" he whispered in disbelief.

"Declan... that’s not even enough for first month’s rent in an apartment!"

"You should be grateful you're not in the cell next to your father, Julian," Declan replied, his voice devoid of any warmth.

"If I ever see your face within five hundred miles of Manhattan, I will instruct my legal team to file criminal accessory charges against you for the Greenwich break-in."

"You will spend the next twenty years breaking rocks."

Julian looked at Declan, then looked at Grace’s back.

He knew there was no mercy left.

He had burned every bridge, destroyed every bond, and traded his soul for cheap vanity.

Without another word, Julian turned, pulled his wet coat around his trembling shoulders, and walked out into the freezing Zurich rain.

The double doors clicked shut.

Grace turned around, letting out a long, shuddering breath.

Declan walked over to her.

"It’s over, Grace."

"The Vance legacy is secure."

"The maritime shipping lanes are untouched."

Grace looked up at Declan, her eyes shining with quiet emotion.

"Thank you, Declan."

"You risked your entire European reputation for my daughter."

Declan took a step closer, looking down into her eyes with an intensity that made Grace’s breath catch in her throat.

May you like

"I didn't do it for your European reputation, Grace," Declan said softly.

"I did it for you."
