Chapter 1 - The Fall of the Perfect Wife

Victoria stared at me,
her mask of perfection cracking,
shattering into a million invisible pieces.
The silence in the nursery was deafening,
broken only by the quiet,
shuddering breaths of my son,
who was still clinging to Sarah.
I did not move,
I did not blink,
I simply watched the woman I had married,
the woman I thought I knew.
For years,
our marriage had been a carefully constructed business arrangement,
a partnership of wealth and status,
designed to conquer the elite circles of Connecticut.
I had given her everything,
unlimited credit cards,
designer wardrobes,
social power,
and the protection of my name.
In return,
I only asked for one thing,
that she be a mother to Ethan.
Now,
looking at the red mark on Sarah's cheek,
I realized my fatal mistake.
I had trusted a serpent to guard my greatest treasure.
Victoria took a step back,
her white cashmere sweater suddenly looking out of place in a room filled with fear.
"Michael,"
she started,
her voice trembling,
losing its usual arrogant edge.
"You do not understand,
she was trying to take him from me,
she was trying to replace me."
I slowly unbuttoned my suit jacket,
letting the dark fabric fall open,
revealing the cold,
hard truth of my presence.
"Replace you?"
I asked,
my voice dangerously low,
barely above a whisper.
"You cannot be replaced in a job you never started,
Victoria."
She gasped,
her eyes widening in horror,
shocked by the cruelty of my words.
I walked past her,
ignoring her presence completely,
and moved toward the crib.
Sarah was still holding Ethan,
her arms wrapped around him like a shield,
protecting him from the monster in the white sweater.
I looked at Sarah,
seeing the genuine terror in her brown eyes,
a fear that was not for herself,
but for my son.
"Sarah,"
I said,
my tone softening,
changing from the boss to the father.
"Give him to me,
please."
She hesitated for a second,
her protective instincts fighting against my command,
but then she saw the look in my eyes.
She nodded,
slowly,
and gently transferred Ethan into my arms.
The moment my son felt my chest,
he buried his tiny face against my shirt,
his small fingers grabbing my lapel,
holding on as if his life depended on it.
I closed my eyes,
feeling a wave of guilt wash over me,
crushing my heart,
breaking my soul.
I had built an empire to keep him safe,
yet the danger was sleeping in the bedroom down the hall.
I turned back to Victoria,
opening my eyes,
letting the coldness return.
"Pack your things,"
I ordered,
my voice leaving no room for argument.
"What?"
she screamed,
her composure completely gone,
replaced by absolute panic.
"You cannot kick me out,
I am your wife,
I am the mother of your child!"
I looked at Ethan,
who flinched at the sound of her screaming,
and then I looked back at her.
"A mother does not make her child flinch,
Victoria."
I walked toward the door,
stopping right beside her,
feeling the heat of her anger,
the desperation in her breath.
"You have one hour to pack,
and then my men will escort you to the guest house on the edge of the property,"
I whispered,
making sure Sarah could not hear the full extent of my threat.
"If you refuse,
if you make a scene,
the people who work for my legitimate businesses will not be the ones packing your bags,
the others will."
Victoria stopped breathing,
her face turning completely pale,
realizing that the rumors she had chosen to ignore were all true.
I walked out of the nursery,
May you like
leaving her standing in the cold,
knowing that the war had just begun.
