Chapter 8 - The Fall of the Judge

Morning broke over the city,

but for Richard Sterling,

the sun brought only ruin and devastation.

I sat in my office,

watching the news feeds on multiple screens,

a cold satisfaction settling in my chest as the plan unfolded perfectly.

The headlines screamed of corruption,

bribery,

and offshore accounts,

painting the honorable judge as a master criminal hiding behind the bench.

His financial empire had vanished overnight,

his political allies were scrambling to distance themselves,

and the police were already surrounding his lavish estate.

My phone rang,

the private line that very few people possessed,

and I knew exactly who it was before picking it up.

"You bastard,"

Sterling hissed,

his voice shaking with a mixture of terror and uncontrolled rage.

"You destroyed everything,

my reputation,

my money,

my life!"

"I warned you,

Richard,"

I replied calmly,

leaning back in my chair,

savoring the sound of his complete defeat.

"You tried to take my son,

you sent armed men into my home,

you broke the rules of the game."

"I am a judge!"

he screamed,

his arrogance completely shattered,

replaced by the desperate pleading of a broken man.

"I can send you to prison for the rest of your life,

I have evidence,

I have connections!"

"You have nothing,

Richard,"

I stated,

cutting through his delusions with brutal honesty.

"Your connections are currently giving statements against you,

and your evidence was erased from the servers three hours ago."

I paused,

letting the silence stretch,

allowing the weight of his situation to crush him entirely.

"The police are at your door,

Richard,

and if you try to mention my name,

if you try to drag me down with you,

I will make sure your time in prison is remarkably short and exceedingly painful."

I hung up the phone,

not waiting for his response,

dismissing him as a threat,

relegating him to the dustbin of history.

I stood up,

straightening my tie,

feeling a sense of closure,

a dark chapter of my life finally ending.

I walked out of the office,

heading toward the guest house,

ready to finish the last piece of this miserable puzzle.

The guards parted as I approached,

their faces blank,

their loyalty absolute.

I unlocked the heavy door,

stepping into the dimly lit living room of the guest house.

Victoria was sitting on the sofa,

wrapped in a blanket,

looking disheveled,

pale,

and completely broken.

The silence and the darkness had done their work,

stripping away her arrogance,

leaving only the frightened,

pathetic woman she truly was.

She looked up as I entered,

her eyes red and swollen from crying,

her hands trembling uncontrollably.

"Michael,"

she whispered,

her voice raspy,

begging for a mercy she did not deserve.

"Please,

I am sorry,

I was wrong,

just let me go."

I stood over her,

feeling absolutely nothing,

no anger,

no pity,

just a cold,

hollow emptiness.

"Your father has been arrested,

Victoria,"

I informed her,

watching her face pale even further,

the last shred of hope dying in her eyes.

"His accounts are frozen,

his reputation is ruined,

he cannot help you."

She began to sob uncontrollably,

curling into a tight ball on the sofa,

realizing the magnitude of her failure.

"The divorce papers are on the table,"

I continued,

pointing to the thick envelope resting on the glass coffee table.

"You will sign them,

giving me full custody of Ethan,

and waiving any claim to my assets."

She didn't move,

just continued to cry,

the sound grating on my nerves,

reminding me of the pain she had caused my son.

"If you sign them,

I will give you a one-way ticket to a country of my choosing,

and enough money to survive,

but you will never return to the United States,

and you will never see Ethan again."

She slowly uncurled,

reaching out with a trembling hand,

picking up the pen resting beside the envelope.

She signed her name,

her signature jagged and messy,

a far cry from the perfect forgery she had attempted days ago.

I picked up the papers,

turning my back on her without another word,

May you like

walking out of the guest house,

leaving her to her self-imposed exile.
