Chapter 6 - The Siege of the Sanctuary

The heavy oak doors of the mansion shook,
a violent pounding echoing through the massive foyer,
shattering the illusion of our security.
I stood at the top of the grand staircase,
my weapon drawn,
my heart pounding a steady,
lethal rhythm against my ribs.
Marcus appeared from the east wing hallway,
moving silently despite his large frame,
an assault rifle tight against his shoulder.
"Three men,"
he signed with one hand,
his eyes scanning the darkness outside the frosted glass panels.
"Heavily armed,
tactical gear,
moving like professionals,
not street thugs."
"Sterling’s men,"
I muttered,
my voice a harsh whisper,
feeling a surge of adrenaline mixed with pure,
unadulterated rage.
The judge had decided to bypass the legal system,
choosing violence instead,
a fatal mistake that would cost him everything.
"They think they can just walk in and take what they want,"
I said,
clicking the safety off my weapon,
the metallic sound unnaturally loud in the quiet house.
"They don't know who they're dealing with,
Boss,"
Marcus replied,
a grim,
predatory smile playing on his lips.
Suddenly,
the glass panels of the front door exploded inward,
showering the marble floor with thousands of glittering shards.
The first intruder stepped through the frame,
his weapon raised,
sweeping the foyer with practiced precision.
He never even saw me.
I fired twice,
the suppressed shots barely making a sound,
but the impact sent him crashing backward onto the front steps.
The second and third men scrambled for cover behind the massive stone pillars flanking the entrance,
realizing too late that they had walked into a slaughterhouse.
"Pin them down,"
I ordered Marcus,
my voice cold and detached,
my mind fully shifting into the mindset of the underworld boss I tried so hard to hide.
Marcus unleashed a short,
controlled burst of fire,
shattering the stonework around the intruders,
keeping their heads down.
I moved swiftly down the stairs,
using the heavy mahogany banister for cover,
my eyes locked on the space between the pillars.
One of them tried to blind-fire around the stone,
a desperate,
panicked move that cost him his hand.
He screamed in agony,
dropping his weapon,
his tactical discipline completely breaking under the pressure.
I closed the distance,
my movements fluid and calculated,
a predator closing in on its prey.
I stepped around the pillar,
my weapon leveled at the wounded man,
my eyes devoid of any mercy or hesitation.
"Who sent you?"
I demanded,
my voice cutting through his screams,
demanding absolute obedience.
He clutched his bleeding hand,
his eyes wide with terror,
looking up at me as if he was staring at the devil himself.
"Sterling,"
he gasped,
choking on his own fear.
"He said... he said just get the kid,
no matter what."
A cold fury washed over me,
a darkness so deep and absolute that it threatened to consume me entirely.
Richard Sterling,
a man sworn to uphold the law,
had sent armed mercenaries to kidnap my son.
I raised my weapon,
aiming it directly between the mercenary's eyes.
"Tell Sterling he started a war he cannot win,"
I said softly,
just before pulling the trigger,
ending his miserable existence.
I turned back toward the stairs,
my heart suddenly freezing in my chest as a new,
horrifying thought struck me.
The attack on the front door was too loud,
too obvious,
a classic distraction meant to draw our attention away from the real target.
"Marcus!"
I yelled,
my voice echoing in the grand foyer,
laced with absolute panic.
"The back stairs,
now!"
We sprinted up the stairs,
taking them two at a time,
desperation fueling every step,
fear clawing at my throat.
I reached Ethan's room,
my breath catching in my throat as I saw the heavy wooden door splintered and broken.
I kicked the door open,
my weapon raised,
my eyes frantically searching the darkness of the nursery.
The room was empty.
The crib was overturned,
blankets scattered across the floor,
and the window leading out to the balcony was wide open.
"No,"
I breathed,
a sound of pure anguish escaping my lips,
my world collapsing around me.
Then,
I heard it.
A soft,
muffled whimper coming from inside the large,
walk-in closet at the back of the room.
I rushed over,
tearing the closet door open,
ready to kill whoever was inside.
But there,
huddled in the darkest corner,
was Sarah.
She was clutching Ethan tightly against her chest,
her body shielding him completely,
a small,
silver revolver trembling in her hands.
She was terrified,
her eyes wide and staring,
but she had not surrendered,
she had fought back.
I dropped to my knees,
pulling them both into my arms,
the relief washing over me so intensely I could barely breathe.
"I've got you,"
I whispered,
burying my face in her hair,
feeling Ethan's tiny hands grabbing my shirt.
May you like
"I've got you both,
you're safe now."
