Chapter 15 - The Trap is Set

The hunt for Antonio Moretti consumed my every waking hour,
turning my days into a blur of violent interrogations,
raids on suspected safe houses,
and endless strategizing in the underground bunker.
I barely saw Sarah and Ethan,
leaving the estate before they woke and returning long after they had gone to sleep,
my body smelling of cheap cigars,
gunpowder,
and the metallic tang of blood.
I was becoming the monster I promised Sarah I wouldn't be,
but I justified it by telling myself it was the only way to ensure their survival,
the only way to end the war.
Moretti was a ghost,
moving from one rat hole to another,
sacrificing his own men to slow my advance,
a coward hiding behind the bodies of his loyal soldiers.
"He is running out of places to hide,
Boss,"
Marcus reported late one Thursday night,
spreading a series of satellite images across the steel table.
"We have choked off his money,
his supply lines,
and his foreign allies have abandoned him,
knowing you will slaughter them next."
"He has to make a move,
he cannot stay underground forever,"
I analyzed,
staring at the blurry images of a secluded compound in the mountains upstate.
"This is his last stronghold,
a heavily fortified mansion,
surrounded by heavily armed guards,
it's a suicide mission to assault it directly."
"Then we don't assault it directly,"
I stated,
a dark,
cunning plan forming in my mind,
a strategy born of desperation and a willingness to do whatever it takes.
"We draw him out,
we give him a target he cannot resist,
something so valuable he will risk everything to take it."
Marcus looked at me,
his eyes narrowing,
understanding the dangerous game I was proposing.
"What target,
Boss?"
"Me,"
I replied simply,
leaning back in my chair,
the confidence of a predator anticipating the kill.
"I will travel to the city tomorrow,
alone,
no security detail,
no armored SUV,
just me and a driver."
"That's suicide,
Michael!"
Marcus argued,
slamming his hand on the table,
his loyalty overriding his usual deference.
"He will send an army,
he will ambush you in the streets,
you won't stand a chance!"
"I won't be alone,
Marcus,"
I corrected him,
a cold smile touching my lips.
"You and the entire assault team will be waiting in the shadows,
tracking my movements,
ready to spring the trap the moment he attacks."
"We will use myself as bait,
draw his forces into a kill zone,
and wipe them out entirely."
Marcus hesitated,
the tactical brilliance of the plan warring with his instinct to protect me at all costs.
"If they get to you before we can close the net,
if there is a sniper,
an explosive..."
"Then I die,
Marcus,"
I interrupted,
my voice devoid of fear,
accepting the harsh reality of my existence.
"But my family lives,
and that is the only thing that matters."
He stared at me for a long time,
understanding the absolute finality of my decision,
the unwavering commitment I had made to protect Sarah and Ethan.
"I will prepare the men,"
he finally said,
his voice heavy,
resigned to the violent path I had chosen.
I left the bunker,
the weight of the impending battle settling heavily on my shoulders,
a cold dread creeping into my heart.
I drove back to the estate,
the massive iron gates opening silently,
welcoming me back to the sanctuary I was risking everything to protect.
The house was quiet,
the staff asleep,
only the silent guards nodding respectfully as I passed.
I walked upstairs,
bypassing my study,
drawn to the master bedroom where Sarah was sleeping.
She looked so peaceful,
her dark hair spread across the white pillows,
her breathing soft and even,
a beautiful contrast to the violence that consumed my life.
I stood by the bed,
watching her,
my heart aching with a love so profound it terrified me,
a love that had made me vulnerable,
yet incredibly strong.
I carefully peeled back the covers,
sliding into bed beside her,
pulling her warm body against my cold one,
needing her comfort,
her presence,
one last time before the storm.
She shifted in her sleep,
murmuring my name,
her hand instinctively finding my chest,
resting over my beating heart.
I closed my eyes,
memorizing the feeling of her skin against mine,
the scent of her hair,
the sound of her breathing,
storing these memories deep within my soul.
Tomorrow,
May you like
I would face the devil,
and I would either return victorious,
