Chapter 10 - The Unseen Threat

Months passed,

peace settling over the Bennett estate like a thick,

comforting blanket,

making the violent memories of the past seem like a distant nightmare.

Sarah had seamlessly transitioned from housekeeper to the undisputed matriarch of the home,

her gentle authority commanding more respect from the staff than my ruthless intimidation ever had.

Ethan was thriving,

his vocabulary expanding daily,

his attachment to Sarah absolute and unwavering,

calling her 'Mama' without hesitation,

a word that brought tears to her eyes every single time.

I had restructured my businesses,

pulling further away from the illegal operations,

delegating the dangerous work to Marcus,

focusing my energy on the legitimate enterprises and,

most importantly,

my family.

But in my world,

peace is always temporary,

a fragile illusion waiting to be shattered by the ghosts of the past or the enemies of the present.

It started with small things,

almost imperceptible changes that only a paranoid man like myself would notice.

A black sedan parked a little too long at the end of the long driveway,

speeding off before security could intercept it.

Anonymous,

encrypted emails bypassing my sophisticated firewalls,

containing nothing but coordinates of places Sarah and Ethan frequented.

I kept this information from Sarah,

not wanting to taint her happiness with my paranoia,

preferring to handle the unseen threat in the shadows where I thrived.

I called Marcus into my study late one night,

the heavy oak doors locked behind him,

the room filled with the tense energy of an impending war.

"Someone is testing our perimeter,"

I said,

sliding a folder of security logs across the massive desk,

my voice tight with suppressed anger.

Marcus reviewed the logs,

his jaw clenching,

his eyes scanning the data with the practiced efficiency of a seasoned killer.

"It's not Sterling's remaining loyalists,"

he concluded,

tossing the folder back on the desk.

"They're too sloppy for this,

this is organized,

professional,

and extremely patient."

"Who then?"

I demanded,

standing up and pacing the length of the study,

the familiar,

cold dread creeping into my veins.

"There are whispers in the city,

Boss,"

Marcus said carefully,

watching my reaction closely.

"Rumors that the Italians are moving into our territory,

trying to capitalize on your recent... distraction with family matters."

The Italians.

The Moretti crime family,

ruthless,

bloodthirsty,

and possessing an army of foot soldiers that rivaled my own.

We had maintained a tense truce for years,

a fragile peace built on mutual respect and the understanding that a war would destroy both our empires.

"If Moretti thinks my family makes me weak,

he is making a fatal miscalculation,"

I growled,

stopping by the window,

looking out at the dark estate,

my protective instincts flaring violently.

"He is trying to bait you,

Michael,"

Marcus warned,

using my first name,

emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

"He wants you to strike first,

so he has an excuse to unleash hell."

"I don't need an excuse to protect what is mine,"

I replied,

my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper,

my mind already calculating the quickest way to sever the head of the Moretti snake.

The next morning,

I reinforced the security detail around Sarah and Ethan,

adding three more heavily armed men to their escort,

instructing them to use lethal force at the slightest sign of danger.

Sarah noticed the extra guards,

her brow furrowing in concern as she strapped Ethan into his car seat for their weekly trip to the park.

"Is everything okay,

Michael?"

she asked,

placing a hand on my chest,

her touch instantly calming the violent storm raging in my mind.

"Just a precaution,

sweetheart,"

I lied smoothly,

pressing a kiss to her forehead,

hating the deception but needing to keep her safe.

"Business is a bit complicated right now,

I just want you both protected."

She nodded,

accepting my answer,

May you like

trusting me completely,

a trust that I swore I would never betray,
