Chapter 4 - The Gathering Storm

By noon,
the atmosphere in the mansion was suffocating,
thick with unspoken threats and rising tension.
I sat in my office,
reviewing the rest of the documents Marcus had unearthed,
each page a testament to my wife's deception.
She had funneled money into private accounts,
paid off a doctor to prescribe sedatives for Ethan to make him sleep longer,
and actively tried to sabotage Sarah's employment.
Every revelation was a knife twisting in my gut,
a reminder of how blind I had been,
how easily I had been fooled by a pretty face and a prestigious last name.
My phone rang,
the sharp sound cutting through the silence of the room.
I looked at the caller ID,
seeing the name I had been expecting all morning.
Judge Richard Sterling,
Victoria's father,
a man with immense political power and a ruthless reputation in the courts.
I picked up the phone,
leaning back in my leather chair,
staring at the ceiling.
"Richard,"
I answered,
keeping my voice smooth,
revealing nothing of the rage boiling inside me.
"Michael,"
the judge barked,
his voice booming through the speaker,
dripping with arrogance and entitlement.
"I just received a very disturbing call from my daughter's maid,
saying Victoria is locked in your guest house."
"She is,"
I replied simply,
not offering any further explanation,
letting the silence hang heavily between us.
"What is the meaning of this?"
he demanded,
his anger escalating quickly.
"You cannot treat my daughter like a prisoner,
Michael,
do you know who I am?"
"I know exactly who you are,
Richard,"
I said,
sitting forward,
my voice dropping an octave.
"But you clearly do not know who I am,
if you think you can threaten me in my own house."
There was a brief pause on the other end,
a moment of hesitation as the judge processed the danger in my tone.
"She is my wife,
Richard,
and she crossed a line that cannot be uncrossed,"
I continued,
staring at the forged signature on my desk.
"She abused my son,
she forged my name,
and she planned to traffic my heir to a foreign country."
"Traffic?"
the judge scoffed,
trying to regain his authority.
"She was looking into educational facilities,
Michael,
you are overreacting."
"If you want to play this game in a courtroom,
Richard,
I will buy the court,"
I promised,
my voice deadly serious.
"I will ruin your reputation,
I will expose her crimes,
and I will make sure the Sterling name is associated with child abuse for the next century."
I could hear his heavy breathing through the phone,
the realization slowly sinking in that he was not dealing with a simple businessman.
"What do you want,
Michael?"
he finally asked,
defeat lacing his words.
"I want a quiet divorce,
full custody of Ethan,
and she walks away with nothing but the clothes on her back,"
I stated,
laying out the terms of her surrender.
"If she fights me,
if you fight me,
I will not use lawyers,
I will use my other resources."
I hung up the phone before he could answer,
ending the conversation on my terms,
establishing my absolute dominance.
I stood up,
walking over to the large window overlooking the gardens,
watching the armed guards patrolling the perimeter.
I had drawn a line in the sand,
declared war on one of the most powerful families in the state,
and I felt absolutely no regret.
I turned around when I heard a soft knock on the door,
followed by Sarah entering the room,
holding Ethan on her hip.
"Mr. Bennett,"
she said softly,
"Ethan wanted to see you before his nap."
I looked at the two of them,
the innocent child and his fierce,
unlikely protector.
"Bring him here,
Sarah,"
I said,
feeling the anger drain out of me,
May you like
replaced by a fierce,
unbreakable resolve to keep them safe.
