Chapter 12 - The War Council

The underground bunker beneath my downtown office was a fortress within a fortress,
designed to withstand a siege,
equipped with state-of-the-art surveillance and communication systems.
My top six lieutenants sat around the heavy steel table,
their faces grim,
their eyes focused,
the tension in the room thick enough to choke on.
I stood at the head of the table,
the silver pacifier resting in the center,
a silent testament to the reason we were all gathered.
"Moretti has crossed the line,"
I began,
my voice echoing off the concrete walls,
commanding absolute silence.
"He believes my focus on my family has made me weak,
he believes he can use my son as leverage to take our territory."
I leaned forward,
placing my hands flat on the cold steel,
meeting the eyes of each man in the room,
ensuring they understood the gravity of my orders.
"I want every Moretti operation hit simultaneously,"
I commanded,
outlining the strategy I had formulated in the brief car ride from the office.
"Their gambling dens,
their smuggling routes,
their safe houses,
burn them all to the ground,
leave nothing but ash."
One of the lieutenants,
a ruthless enforcer named Dante,
cleared his throat,
a rare display of hesitation.
"Boss,
a coordinated attack of that scale... it will draw the attention of the feds,
it will be a bloodbath on the streets."
"Let them watch,"
I replied,
my voice devoid of any concern for the authorities,
my focus solely on annihilating my enemy.
"Let the entire city see what happens when someone threatens my blood,
I want Moretti isolated,
bleeding,
and begging for a swift death."
Marcus stepped forward,
placing a detailed map of the city on the table,
highlighting the key Moretti strongholds in red ink.
"We hit the harbor first,"
Marcus suggested,
his tactical mind working flawlessly.
"Cut off their supply lines,
cripple their income,
then we move on the warehouses."
"Agreed,"
I said,
tracing the route with my finger,
visualizing the destruction,
the swift,
merciless execution of the plan.
"But Moretti himself is my target,
I want him alive,
I want him brought to me,
I need him to understand exactly why his empire fell before I end him."
The men nodded in unison,
their loyalty absolute,
their readiness for violence unquestionable.
They were monsters,
just like me,
but they were my monsters,
and I was unleashing them upon the city.
The meeting ended with a swift,
silent agreement,
the men dispersing into the shadows to prepare their respective squads for the impending slaughter.
I remained in the bunker,
staring at the map,
the red ink resembling the blood that would soon spill across the city streets.
My phone vibrated,
a stark contrast to the violent plans I was orchestrating,
and I saw Sarah's name flashing on the screen.
I took a deep breath,
forcing the warlord back into his cage,
summoning the gentle,
loving persona I reserved only for her.
"Hello,
beautiful,"
I answered,
my voice softening instantly,
the sound of her breathing on the other end a balm to my fractured soul.
"Michael,
are you coming home soon?"
she asked,
her voice laced with a subtle anxiety,
a fear she was trying hard to hide.
"The guards are acting strange,
they are checking every room,
every window,
they won't even let Ethan play in the backyard."
"I'll be home soon,
Sarah,"
I promised,
the lie tasting like ash in my mouth,
knowing I wouldn't sleep until Moretti was dead.
"Just stay inside,
keep the doors locked,
and trust Marcus's men,
they are there to protect you."
"Protect us from what,
Michael?"
she asked,
the fear breaking through her facade,
her voice trembling slightly.
"From the past,"
I replied softly,
unable to tell her the brutal truth,
unable to show her the monster I truly was.
"I love you,
Sarah,
never forget that."
I hung up before she could ask another question,
May you like
the guilt gnawing at my conscience,
a heavy burden I willingly carried to ensure their survival.
