Chapter 14 - The Retaliation

The silence was the worst part,
the suffocating quiet that followed my devastating strike on the harbor.
For three days,
the Moretti family did nothing,
a complete absence of retaliation that made my paranoia spike to dangerous levels.
They were bleeding,
isolated,
their empire crumbling around them,
but Antonio Moretti was not a man who surrendered quietly.
I doubled the security at the estate,
turning the sprawling property into an armed fortress,
my men patrolling the perimeter with dogs and thermal imaging cameras.
Sarah noticed the heightened tension,
her easy smiles replaced by worried glances,
her playful interactions with Ethan shadowed by an underlying fear.
I tried to reassure her,
spending hours in the playroom,
reading stories,
building block towers,
pretending that the world outside our walls was not burning.
But the facade shattered on a Tuesday afternoon,
while I was holding a tense meeting in my study,
discussing the next phase of the assault with Marcus.
The heavy wooden doors burst open,
Dante stumbling into the room,
his face pale,
his usually impeccable suit covered in blood and dust.
"Boss,"
he gasped,
clutching a bleeding wound on his shoulder,
his eyes wild with panic.
"They hit the downtown club,
it was a slaughter,
they used explosives,
didn't even care about the civilians."
I stood up instantly,
the air leaving my lungs,
the cold reality of the retaliation crashing down upon me.
"How many?"
I demanded,
my voice tight,
striding around the desk to grab my weapon from the hidden drawer.
"Dozens,"
Dante replied,
wincing as he leaned against the doorframe.
"They drove a truck straight through the front doors and detonated,
we lost half the security team."
"Lock down the estate,
nobody goes out,
nobody comes in,
shoot anything that moves,"
I ordered Marcus,
the warlord fully unleashed,
the businessman entirely gone.
"I am going downtown."
"Boss,
it's too dangerous,
they might be waiting for you,"
Marcus argued,
stepping in front of me,
trying to reason with a man who was past reasoning.
"They attacked my people,
Marcus,
they slaughtered innocents to get to me,
I will not hide behind these walls while my men bleed,"
I growled,
pushing past him,
my vision narrow,
focused entirely on revenge.
I grabbed Dante,
hauling him toward the medical wing of the estate,
ordering the doctor to patch him up before I headed to the garage.
I chose the heavily armored SUV,
the reinforced steel offering some protection against the war zone my city had become.
As I climbed into the driver's seat,
the passenger door opened,
and Marcus slid in,
his assault rifle resting on his lap.
"If you die,
I die,
Boss,"
he said simply,
his loyalty unwavering,
a bond forged in blood and violence.
I nodded,
slamming the vehicle into gear,
the powerful engine roaring as we tore down the long driveway,
leaving the sanctuary behind.
The drive to the city was tense,
the radio crackling with reports of police activity,
fire trucks rushing toward the burning club,
the chaos organized by Moretti's desperate strike.
We approached the scene cautiously,
parking several blocks away,
moving through the alleys like the predators we were.
The club was a twisted ruin of metal and concrete,
flames licking the sky,
the air thick with the smell of burning flesh and gasoline.
My men were pulling bodies from the rubble,
their faces grim,
their eyes filled with the same murderous rage that burned in my own heart.
This was not a tactical strike,
this was an act of pure terrorism,
a desperate attempt by a dying man to inflict as much pain as possible.
I stood in the shadows,
watching the destruction,
the flames reflecting in my cold,
unforgiving eyes,
making a silent vow to end the Moretti bloodline entirely.
My phone vibrated,
the harsh sound jolting me from my dark thoughts.
I looked at the screen,
expecting a report from one of my lieutenants,
but the number was blocked,
untraceable.
I answered it slowly,
pressing the phone to my ear,
saying nothing.
"Do you see the fire,
Michael?"
Antonio Moretti's voice slithered through the speaker,
a mocking,
venomous tone that made my blood boil.
"Do you see what happens when you touch my empire?"
"I see a desperate man trying to fight a war he has already lost,"
I replied,
my voice calm,
lethal,
devoid of any emotion.
"I took a few of your clubs,
Antonio,
you took a few of my men,
but you made a fatal mistake."
"Oh,
and what is that?"
he sneered,
confidence laced with fear.
"You missed me,"
I promised,
"And I will not miss you."
I crushed the phone in my hand,
tossing the broken pieces into the burning rubble,
May you like
turning back to Marcus with eyes that held no mercy.
"Find him."
