Chapter 59 - Two Names, One Promise

The adoption hearing was held on an ordinary Thursday.

There were no television cameras.

No velvet ropes.

No one outside the family's small circle knew the time.

Lily wore a blue dress with pockets deep enough for important things. In one she carried Mateo's dolphin eraser. In the other rested a photograph of Jorge holding her when she was a baby.

Elena noticed the corner of the picture and kissed her daughter's forehead.

“Ready?”

“I think so.”

Dante looked more nervous than he had at his wedding.

Marco noticed and offered him a mint.

“Does it show?” Dante whispered.

“From space.”

Sofia laughed from her chair and told them both to behave.

The judge had reviewed the required materials. The proceeding was warm, careful, and centered on the child whose life the papers described.

When Lily was asked about her wishes, she sat straighter.

“I want Dante to be my dad on the forms too,” she said.

A small smile moved through the room.

“And your name?”

“Lily Castellanos Moretti.”

She spoke each part distinctly.

Dante felt Elena's hand tighten around his.

The judge asked a few more questions, giving Lily time to answer without help.

Then came the order.

A legal relationship catching up with years of breakfast, bedtime, school pickups, frightened questions, and quiet acts nobody photographed.

Dante bent his head.

For a moment, he could not see clearly.

Lily stepped toward him.

“Are you crying?”

“Yes.”

“Okay.”

She hugged him, apparently relieved that adults could give uncomplicated answers sometimes.

Enzo demanded to know whether this meant Lily had become more his sister.

The judge smiled.

“She was already your sister in the ways that matter to you.”

Enzo considered that.

“Good. She has my crayons.”

Laughter filled the room.

Afterward, they visited Jorge's grave before going home.

Lily showed the photograph to the headstone, then tucked it safely back into her pocket.

“I kept your name,” she said softly.

Elena stood beside her, tears slipping down her face.

Dante waited until Lily reached for him.

Some invitations would always deserve to be accepted gently.

On the way back, they stopped for a few groceries because Enzo had finished the strawberries reserved for breakfast. Dante pushed the cart while Lily held the list. At the checkout, the cashier asked whether they wanted a receipt. Lily said yes before anyone else answered. Then she grinned at Elena, who rolled her eyes affectionately. Some family jokes had arrived by difficult roads, but they belonged to laughter now.

At home, the pancakes were terrible.

Dante had insisted on making them himself and become distracted reading the adoption order again.

Elena rescued the second batch.

Frank arrived with strawberries. Rosa brought sweet bread. Mateo carried a card he claimed his aunt had forced him to make.

Inside, he had drawn a bridge that held.

Lily placed it beside her plate without teasing him.

Sofia raised a glass of sparkling cider.

“To paperwork finally learning what the rest of us knew.”

They drank.

Later, Dante found Lily in the gallery hallway, standing before the family painting from years earlier.

“Does it need changing?” he asked.

“No.”

He looked at the canvas.

Jorge remained in gold behind them. Elena wore her wedding dress. Lily stood between the two living people who loved her, holding her little scissors toward the sky.

“There's no Enzo,” Dante said.

“He wasn't here yet.”

“Should we add him?”

Lily shook her head.

“That was our family then. We can paint another one now.”

Dante smiled.

The wisdom in her answer did not make her responsible for teaching him anything else.

He simply took her hand and walked toward the kitchen, where her brother was demanding another pancake.

Behind them, the old painting stayed exactly as it was.

Ahead, there was room on the wall. Elena was already clearing a place near the window for a new canvas, though Lily said she might choose a smaller one this time. Nobody argued. Families could fit inside many sizes of frame. Dante kept the adoption order in a plain folder beside the school forms, where it would become part of ordinary life, useful and treasured without needing to announce itself every morning.
