Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Dark

The Moretti estate shifted onto a silent, invisible war footing. Outside, the mansion appeared tranquil behind its wrought-iron gates, but behind the soundproofed walls of Dante’s private quarters, a meticulously orchestrated trap was taking shape.
Marco had placed four of Dante’s most trusted personal guards at the perimeter, keeping Victor’s regular crew unaware that their access codes had been revoked. Victor Romano himself remained oblivious to his exposed treachery, believing that the postponed meeting for Thursday on Mott Street was his golden opportunity to strike.
Inside the library, Dante sat beside Lily, who was busy with a fresh pack of imported colored pencils that Dante had ordered delivered from an upscale art shop on Fifth Avenue.
“Lily,” Dante asked softly, watching her small hands carefully shade a blue ocean. “Have you seen any other shiny bugs like the one in the tie?”
Lily paused, her pencil hovering over the paper. She tapped her chin with the eraser, her wide, observant eyes darting around the expansive room. She got up from the rug, walked across the polished parquet floor, and stopped in front of the ornate grandfather clock that stood near the entrance.
She reached her small hand behind the carved mahogany pendulum case, her fingers feeling along the dusty groove. “There's another one sleeping in the clock,” she whispered. “The man with the silver watch put it there when he visited last week. He dropped his pen, and when he picked it up, he fed the clock.”
Marco, who was standing by the window, went rigid. Dante signaled for him to remain calm. Dante walked over, knelt beside the child, and carefully reached his fingers behind the wooden filigree. Sure enough, his fingertips grazed the cold, magnetic edge of another copper transmitter.
Victor had bugged Dante’s personal sanctuary. Every word spoken in the library for the past seven days had been transmitted straight to Victor’s listening post.
Dante’s jaw tightened, but a dangerous smile touched his lips. “Marco,” he whispered. “Leave it exactly where it is.”
“Boss?” Marco muttered in surprise.
“If Victor wants to listen, let’s give him a show worth hearing,” Dante commanded quietly.
For the next two days, Dante and Marco conducted carefully staged conversations within range of the grandfather clock. They spoke of panic within the family, fabricated fictitious financial losses in their Atlantic City holdings, and claimed that the other four mafia dons were planning to use the Thursday meeting to demand Dante step down from his leadership post. Dante painted himself as cornered, weakened, and desperate to appease the rival bosses at any cost.

Through the listening device, Victor absorbed every fabricated detail. In his mind, Dante was on the brink of collapse, making Thursday’s summit the perfect moment to wipe out the remaining Moretti loyalists and crown himself the savior of the syndicate.
Meanwhile, upstairs in the family guest suite, Elena and Lily were moved into the mansion’s most secure private rooms. Elena watched her daughter sleep peacefully beneath heavy silk duvets, still unable to comprehend how the ruthless mafia don had transformed into a gentle guardian for her little girl.
