Chapter 19 - Fire and Ash

The storm that night was not made of snow, but of torrential spring rain and thunder that shook the Brooklyn docks.

Outside the abandoned red-brick tomato cannery near the Red Hook basin, four heavily armed Italian mercenaries stood guard under plastic ponchos, their automatic rifles concealed beneath raincoats. They had no idea that twenty seasoned union dockworkers, armed with hunting rifles and iron crowbars, had already cut the wire fences behind them.

Inside the cavernous, rotting warehouse, Don Salvatore Bellini sat on a wooden crate, smoking a foul-smelling Tuscan cigar. Standing beside him was Victor Romano, his face gaunt, his eyes hollow with terror and desperation.

"You swore you had the girl," Victor hissed, pacing nervously across the oil-stained floor. "If Dante comes here, none of us are leaving alive! You don't know him, Salvatore! He’s a demon when he’s cornered!"

Bellini scoffed, waving his hand in disgust. "You are a coward, Romano. A pathetic dog who let a four-year-old child take his empire. In Sicily, we cut the throat of the wolf and burn the cubs in their den. Tonight, Moretti’s house will be turned to ash."

Suddenly, the massive industrial roll-up doors of the cannery were torn completely off their tracks with a deafening screech of grinding metal.

A heavy Caterpillar industrial forklift, driven by Frank Brennan in a yellow rain slicker, smashed through the entrance, pulverizing the barricades.

Before the guards could raise their rifles, flashbang grenades detonated across the interior, blinding the room in concussive white light and thunderous booms.

"Drop your weapons!" Marco’s voice roared through the smoke.

Gunfire erupted, echoing like thunderclaps inside the metal building. Bellini’s guards scrambled for cover behind rusted canning machines, but they were hopelessly outmaneuvered. The dockworkers knew every shadow, every catwalk, and every blind spot in the facility. Within three minutes, all of Bellini’s foreign mercenaries were disarmed and pinned face-down in the mud.

Victor Romano shrieked, scrambling up a rusted metal ladder toward the elevated conveyor belt, trying to escape through a skylight.

"Going somewhere, Victor?" a voice purred from the shadows above.

Dante Moretti stood at the top of the platform, drenched in rain from the broken roof, looking down like an archangel of death.

Victor froze on the ladder, his knees shaking uncontrollably. "Dante... please! It was Bellini! He forced me! He broke me out of the van! He threatened my family!"

"You don't have a family, Victor," Dante said, his voice cutting through the falling rain. "You traded your family for envelopes of dirty cash twenty years ago. And today, you sent a sniper to shoot a four-year-old girl in her garden."

"I didn't know about the sniper! I swear to God!" Victor wept, clinging to the wet rungs.

Dante stepped forward, grabbing Victor by the throat with one hand, lifting him until the traitor's feet dangled fifty feet above the concrete floor. "Look down there, Victor. That’s the red dirt Jorge Castellanos walked on every day to feed his child."

"Please... Dante... don't drop me!" Victor begged, tears and rain mixing on his face.

"I won't drop you," Dante said with terrifying calm. "That would be too easy."

Dante threw Victor back onto the metal platform, where Marco instantly pinned him with heavy zip-ties.

Down below, Don Salvatore Bellini was forced to his knees by Frank Brennan. The old Sicilian don glared up at Dante with defiant hatred. "You traitor to your blood, Dante! You side with dock scum and Mexican maids against your own flesh!"

Dante descended the metal stairs, his boots splashing in the red puddles. He stopped two feet in front of his uncle, his expression an impenetrable mask of pure cold steel.

"My flesh was Jorge Castellanos, an honest man who built this city," Dante said, looking down at Bellini. "You are just an old pirate who forgot that in New York, honor isn't bought in Naples. It’s earned in the streets."

Dante signaled to Marco. "Deliver Bellini to the Italian embassy in Washington under armed guard, along with the surveillance footage of his terrorist operation tonight. The Italian anti-mafia squad has thirty warrants waiting for him. As for Victor... put him in the deepest cell beneath the union hall. Tomorrow, he faces the real court."
