Chapter 24 - A Question in the Rose Garden

Spring had blossomed into the golden warmth of early summer. The expansive private rose gardens behind the 74th Street mansion were in full bloom, filled with the intoxicating scent of crimson and white tea roses.
Lily was sitting on a wrought-iron garden bench, happily constructing a miniature cardboard castle for her doll, carefully trimming paper battlements with her dolphin scissors.
A few feet away, Dante and Elena walked side by side along the gravel path, the warm June breeze rustling the leaves of the ancient oak trees.
"The union approved the new medical center plans this morning," Elena said, smiling as she looked over at Dante. "We’re naming it after your father, Enzo Moretti. The board felt it was only right, given how much you’ve done to transition the harbor into a completely legitimate commercial enterprise."
Dante stopped, turning to face Elena. Over the past six months, he had systematically dismantled all illicit operations of the Moretti syndicate, divesting from shady casinos and back-alley rackets, transforming the family holdings into legitimate logistics, real estate development, and charitable foundations. Under Elena’s influence, the feared mob don had completed the redemption of his father’s name.
"My father would have been honored, Elena," Dante said softly. "But he would have known, as I know, that you are the true architect of this peace."
Elena looked down, a delicate blush warming her cheeks. "Dante... when I first walked into this house with my apron and cleaning supplies, I thought you were the most terrifying man alive."
"I was," Dante admitted honestly, looking into her dark, beautiful eyes. "I was a man living in a cage of paranoia, surrounded by men who smiled at my face and sharpened knives for my back. I believed that power was the only thing that kept a man alive."
He stepped closer, his voice dropping into that deep, gentle timbre that only Elena and Lily ever heard.
"And then, a tiny girl with scissors and a shoe box walked into my study. She cut away the poison that was killing me. And her mother showed me that real strength isn't about how many men you can destroy... it’s about how many you can protect, love, and lift up."
Elena’s heart fluttered in her chest. She looked up, her breath catching as Dante slowly reached into his inner pocket.
He didn't pull out a legal deed, nor a weapon.
He pulled out a small, handcrafted velvet box.
Dante dropped gracefully onto one knee on the gravel path between the blooming roses.
Elena gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as tears of pure, joyous shock filled her eyes.
"Elena Castellanos," Dante said, his voice ringing with steady, profound devotion. "You brought light into a house that had known only darkness for fifty years. You and Lily gave me a reason to be a better man. I don't want to just be your protector. I want to be your husband, your partner, and a father to the brave little girl who saved my life."
He opened the velvet box. Inside rested a magnificent platinum ring set with a brilliant round diamond, flanked by two delicate emeralds representing the colors of hope and new beginnings.
"Will you marry me, Elena?"
From the bench, Lily dropped her cardboard castle and gasped in delight, clapping her hands together. "Say yes, Mami! Say yes!"

Elena laughed through her happy tears, kneeling down on the gravel beside Dante, throwing her arms around his neck. "Yes, Dante! A thousand times yes!"
Dante wrapped his arms around her, lifting her up as their lips met in a sweet, passionate kiss that sealed their bond forever, surrounded by the fragrant roses and the pure laughter of the child who had made it all possible.
