Chapter 26 - Lily’s Masterpiece

In July, the grand foyer of the 74th Street mansion underwent a complete transformation. Gone were the dark Renaissance paintings of brooding conquerors and bloody battles. In their place, warm sunlight poured through restored skylights onto ivory walls adorned with colorful modern art.

Lily had spent three weeks locked inside her sunlit studio on the third floor, refusing to let anyone—even Dante—see what she was working on.

"It’s for the wedding," Lily had declared firmly, wagging her little finger at Marco when he tried to peek while delivering her favorite strawberry milkshakes. "It’s top secret art!"

Finally, on a warm Saturday afternoon, Lily stood at the top of the grand staircase, wearing a bright yellow sundress and her golden dolphin scissors in her belt holster.

"Mami! Dante! Marco! Come look!" she shouted, her voice bubbling with excitement.

Elena and Dante walked into the foyer, looking up with warm smiles. Behind them, Marco and Frank Brennan stood waiting, both men looking curiously toward the velvet-covered easel standing on the landing.

"Close your eyes!" Lily commanded.

Dante and Elena obediently covered their eyes.

Lily counted to three in her brightest voice: "One... two... three! Open!"

She dramatically pulled the velvet drape away.

Elena gasped, tears immediately springing to her eyes. Dante stopped breathing, his heart swelling with an emotion so deep, so pure, it defied words.

The painting was a massive, magnificent oil canvas. Lily’s technical skill had evolved beyond her years, blending her uncanny photographic memory with breathtaking emotional warmth.

The painting depicted the great lawn of the Moretti estate. Standing in the center was Dante, handsome and smiling, holding hands with Elena, who was wearing a flowing white wedding gown and Jorge’s bronze anchor watch around her wrist.

Standing between them was Lily, wearing her golden union badge and holding her dolphin scissors high toward the sky.

And standing directly behind them, rendered in translucent, golden light with a gentle, approving smile, was Jorge Castellanos, his hand resting lovingly on Dante’s shoulder in a gesture of eternal gratitude and brotherhood.

Above them all, written in elegant, colorful letters that Lily had practiced for weeks, was a single phrase:

OUR FAMILY.

Elena buried her face in Dante’s chest, weeping tears of pure, unadulterated happiness. Dante wrapped his arms around her, his own eyes moist as he looked up at the little girl on the landing.

"Lily," Dante said, his voice thick with reverence. "It is the greatest masterpiece this house will ever hold."

Lily skipped down the stairs, throwing her arms around both of their waists. "Now Daddy Jorge is happy in heaven because Dante is taking care of us, and Dante is happy because we took away his bad ties!"

Frank Brennan wiped a tear from his eye, nudging Marco with his elbow. "Look at that, kid. A four-year-old with a paintbrush did what a thousand cops couldn't do. She built a family out of steel and love."

Marco smiled, nodding with deep conviction. "The greatest don this city ever had was just waiting for his daughter to find him."
