Chapter 53 - The Daughter Who Chose

“Would adopting me mean Daddy Jorge wasn't my daddy anymore?”

Lily asked the question without looking away.

Dante felt every possible answer crowd his throat.

Elena spoke first.

“No, sweetheart. Nobody can replace that.”

Lily pressed her palms against her knees.

“People call Dante my dad. I call him that sometimes. But the school forms are different.”

They had discussed adoption years earlier, then delayed formal steps because grief, adjustment, and Lily's changing feelings deserved room. Their family had never depended on a document.

Still, documents governed who could sign permission slips, make certain decisions, and stand where love already lived.

Dante leaned forward.

“If this is something you want, we'll talk with someone who understands the process. You can ask questions. You can change your mind.”

“Would I keep Castellanos?”

“If that's what you want.”

“And Moretti?”

“If that's what you want too.”

Lily considered the names as carefully as colors on a palette.

“I don't want to lose anybody.”

Dante's eyes burned.

“You aren't a room with only one chair.”

She smiled a little.

“Then yes. I want to ask about it.”

The consultation took place in a family lawyer's office with windows overlooking a small playground. The attorney explained the process in language Lily could understand and spoke with Elena and Dante separately about the legal requirements.

There would be paperwork, records, and time.

There would also be space for Lily's wishes.

Nothing happened because a wealthy man demanded it.

Dante appreciated that more than he expected.

Lily asked whether judges ever changed their minds about children. The attorney explained that the process was meant to protect her interests. Dante listened without promising he could remove uncertainty. He could promise to keep showing up, which was what he told her in the elevator. Lily took his hand and pressed the button for the lobby, satisfied for the moment with an answer she could test tomorrow.

Later, they visited Jorge's grave.

Elena brought flowers.

Lily brought a drawing of the boat and its new dock.

She tucked it into a protective sleeve beside the flowers, then stood quietly.

“I still remember your laugh,” she whispered.

Elena closed her eyes.

Dante remained a few steps back until Lily reached for his hand.

Then he joined them.

For years, he had worried that loving Jorge's daughter meant standing in another man's place.

Now he understood that he had been invited to stand beside it.

On the drive home, Lily fell asleep.

Elena watched the passing trees.

“He would have wanted her safe.”

“I hope he'd believe I can do that.”

“He'd want you to know you can't control everything.”

Dante laughed softly.

“He sounds difficult.”

“He was. You would have argued about coffee.”

They smiled, and the grief between them became something shared rather than guarded.

At the house, June waited with news.

Mercer's chief operating officer had provided communications showing coordination between the false mortgage package and the pressure campaign. Investigators were preparing formal action based on multiple sources.

The timing remained uncertain.

Elena listened, then looked toward the car where Lily still slept.

“Tell us what we need to do.”

“Keep preserving records. Keep letting counsel handle contact. And try to sleep.”

Dante carried Lily upstairs.

She stirred against his shoulder.

“Did I miss the ending?”

“No.”

“Good.”

He tucked her into bed and placed Mateo's dolphin eraser beside the lamp.

As he turned away, she caught his sleeve.

“When the papers happen, can we have pancakes?”

“We can have pancakes before the papers.”

She nodded, satisfied.

Downstairs, Elena stood beneath the painting of their family.

Jorge's golden figure remained behind them, his painted hand resting on Dante's shoulder.

For the first time, Dante looked at it without wondering whether he had earned permission.

The girl upstairs had answered for herself. He joined Elena beneath the frame, and they stood together while the house settled around them. Tomorrow would bring forms, counsel, repairs, and unanswered questions. Tonight had brought something neither could have arranged or purchased. Elena slipped her arm through his. Dante rested his cheek against her hair and let the quiet hold them, grateful that love could grow without asking memory to make room by disappearing.
