Chapter 16 - Return of the Anchor

Sunday morning brought a brilliant, cloudless blue sky, the fresh blanket of snow sparkling like diamonds across Central Park.

In the sunlit living room of the Moretti estate, Elena sat on the sofa, her hands resting quietly in her lap, watching Lily play on the rug. Lily had constructed an entire miniature city using colorful wooden blocks, placing a small toy harbor at the center with paper boats floating on blue construction paper.

The parlor double doors opened, and Dante walked in. He looked tired, with faint shadows beneath his eyes from the long night, but his posture was upright, dignified, and filled with a rare, peaceful serenity.

"Dante!" Lily cried out, abandoning her blocks and running toward him with open arms.

Dante caught her, lifting her effortlessly into the air before holding her close against his shoulder. "Good morning, little sunshine."

Elena stood up, her heart racing as she searched Dante’s face for news. "Dante? Did... did something happen last night?"

Dante set Lily gently on her feet and reached into his breast pocket. He retrieved a small, worn velvet pouch and handed it to Elena.

Elena’s hands trembled violently as she untied the gold cord. She poured the contents into her palm.

There, shining under the morning light, was Jorge’s bronze anchor watch. The glass was unblemished, the metal polished to a brilliant shine, and inside, the steady tick-tick-tick of the balance wheel echoed like a heartbeat that had returned from the grave.

Elena collapsed to her knees, clutching the watch to her chest as a dam of tears broke loose. It was not grief; it was the overwhelming, soul-shattering release of eighteen months of pain, fear, and stolen dignity.

"Jorge..." she sobbed, pressing her forehead against the cool bronze. "Oh, Jorge..."

Lily knelt beside her mother, wrapping her small arms around Elena’s neck. "Daddy’s watch is home, Mami. Look, it’s ticking! It’s saying 'I love you.'"

Dante knelt beside both of them, his presence an unbreakable shield of comfort. "Lawrence Thorne signed a full confession at five this morning. By noon, the district attorney will unseal the indictment for first-degree murder, conspiracy, and racketeering. The harbor is safe forever, Elena. Jorge’s name has been cleared across the entire nation."

Elena looked up through her tears, her vision blurred, seeing the man who had risked everything—his empire, his reputation, and his life—to restore justice to a family that had once cleaned his floors.

"How can we ever thank you?" Elena wept, reaching out to take Dante’s hand, holding it against her cheek. "You didn't have to do this for us. We were nobody to you."

"You were never nobody," Dante said softly, his voice thick with uncharacteristic emotion. "In this city of wolves, Lily was the only one who saw the truth. She gave me my life back. Giving you justice was the least I could do for Jorge."

Lily looked between them, her wide, perceptive eyes soaking in every detail. She reached into her little pocket, pulled out her golden dolphin scissors, and gently snipped a small red ribbon from the velvet pouch, carefully tying it around Dante’s wrist like a bracelet of honor.

"Now you're part of Jorge’s team," Lily declared proudly with a bright, sunny grin. "No bad men can ever break Jorge’s team."

For the first time in twenty years, a tear rolled down Dante Moretti’s cheek, which he quickly wiped away with a deep, contented chuckle. "Jorge’s team it is, Lily. Forever."
