Chapter 7 - The Web of Scorpions

By midnight, Kane Tower was dark, except for the high-security server archives in the basement.

Adrian Kane sat alone at a metal desk surrounded by three forensic accountants and two former federal prosecutors.

Printouts of bank transactions, encrypted offshore accounts, and communication logs covered the walls.

For seven days, Adrian had turned his entire corporate machine inward, tearing apart Vanessa Reed’s decade-long career.

What they found had turned his stomach into cold ash.

Vanessa had not simply been an overzealous assistant protecting the family trust.

She was an architect of systemic theft and deliberate psychological isolation.

"Mr. Kane, look at this wire trace from eighteen months ago," the lead investigator, a gray-haired former IRS agent named Miller, said, sliding a ledger under Adrian’s tired eyes.

"The private specialist clinic Margaret Bennett was attending—the Kane Respiratory Institute—was receiving an annual subsidy of four million dollars from your primary philanthropic fund."

"Yes," Adrian rasped. "I established that grant five years ago when I married Claire."

"Three years ago, Miss Reed quietly altered the institutional governance bylaws," Miller explained.

"She rerouted seventy percent of that clinical grant through a management consulting firm in Delaware called Reed & Partners."

"She was skimming two point eight million dollars every year."

Adrian’s hands clenched into fists so tight his fingernails cut into his palms.

"Go on," he whispered.

"When Margaret Bennett’s health took a critical turn six months ago, the attending physician requested a transfer to the private surgical wing at Johns Hopkins."

"That transfer was approved by the medical board."

"Miss Reed intercepted the medical notification."

"She forged your electronic signature, declining the transfer on the grounds that 'the family preferred palliative care in Chicago.'"

Adrian felt as though the floor was dropping out beneath him.

"She forged my name to keep Margaret from leaving Chicago?"

"If Margaret had gone to Johns Hopkins, the federal insurance auditors there would have immediately detected the financial irregularities in the Kane grant," Miller said bluntly.

"Vanessa had to keep Margaret inside St. Jude's under her controlled billing umbrella."

"And on Sunday night... when Claire called?" Adrian asked, his voice shaking with sickening dread.

Miller pulled up a transcript of an encrypted text exchange between Vanessa Reed and a private account in the Cayman Islands.

The timestamp was 2:19 AM on the night Margaret died.

"The thirty thousand was never about hospital compliance, Mr. Kane."

"Vanessa had completely emptied the liquid discretionary account that afternoon to fund an emergency wire to her offshore shell company."

"The account was empty."

"If she hit 'approve,' the transaction would have bounced for non-sufficient funds, and an automated audit alert would have gone directly to your personal phone."

"She didn't delay the money because she was arrogant, Mr. Kane."

"She delayed it because she had already stolen it."

"She let Margaret Bennett die to buy herself twenty-four hours to cover her paper trail."

Adrian sat in the cold fluorescent basement as the magnitude of his blindness washed over him.

He remembered every time Claire had tried to tell him that Vanessa was cold, that Vanessa was hostile, that Vanessa was blocking her communications.

And every single time, Adrian had uttered the same fatal words:

"Talk to Vanessa."

"Follow Vanessa’s instructions, Claire."

"Stop being hysterical."

He had handed his wife over to a scorpion and congratulated himself on his business efficiency.

Adrian stood up slowly, his face devoid of color, his eyes burning with terrifying clarity.

"Where is Vanessa Reed right now?"

"She posted two million dollars bail through her corporate surety bond yesterday," Miller replied.

"She is currently under house arrest at her penthouse on Lake Shore Drive, awaiting formal federal indictment."

Adrian took his overcoat off the back of the chair.

"Cancel the company legal defense fund."

"Notify the United States Attorney that the Kane Corporation is waiving all executive privilege."

"Turn over every server, every hard drive, and every foreign banking ledger."

"And tell the federal marshals that if she tries to move one dollar out of the country, I will personally fund the international manhunt."

Adrian walked out into the cold night air.

The Chicago wind cut through his coat, but he did not feel the cold.

He felt the crushing weight of a guilt that would follow him to his grave.
