Chapter 16 - The Skeleton in the Vance Vault

By afternoon, Claire had mobilized three civil engineering teams specializing in hazmat remediation to survey the clinic’s eastern foundation.
Julian spent the midday hours in the basement archives of the Cook County Municipal Court, cross-referencing the Kane land transfer from 2002.
He wanted to prove to Claire that he was fully on her side, that Adrian’s intervention meant nothing to him beyond the practical utility of the blueprints.
But as Julian pulled the dusty deed envelopes from the county vault, a microfiche spool fell from an unsealed folder marked "Confidential: Settlement Agreement Bennett vs. Kane Smelting."
Julian took the spool to the reading machine in the corner of the dim basement.
He loaded the film, clicked the projector lamp on, and focused the lens against the scratched glass.
The document that materialized made the breath seize in his lungs.
It was a wrongful death complaint filed in 2004 by Margaret Bennett against Kane Enterprises.
Margaret had discovered that the smelting works were releasing chromium-6 into the municipal stormwater channels.
She had gathered testimonies from forty-five local families whose children had developed leukemia.
Julian scrolled down, his heart pounding a frantic rhythm against his ribs.
The complaint had never gone to trial.
It had been settled out of court, dismissed with prejudice, and sealed under a permanent gag order.
At the bottom of the dismissal order were three signatures.
The first was Richard Kane, Chief Executive Officer.
The second was Margaret Bennett, who had signed under severe financial duress while hospitalized in intensive care.
And the third signature, acting as the presiding municipal magistrate who had approved the sealing of the criminal evidence, was Judge Marcus Vance.
Julian slumped back in his chair, staring at the glowing screen in sheer horror.
Marcus Vance was his father.
The venerable, pristine, moral pillar of the Vance legal dynasty had taken a payoff to bury Margaret Bennett’s evidence.
The clinic hadn't just been built on Kane poison; it had been built on Vance complicity.

All these years, Julian had fancied himself Claire’s untainted protector, the righteous foil to Adrian’s cold arrogance.
Now, the truth was laid bare: Julian’s own inheritance was soaked in the same toxic lie.
