Chapter 17 - The Severed Thread

The rain returned with torrential fury by evening, lashing against the windows of Claire’s private quarters above the clinic.

Claire was wrapping sterile bandages into emergency kits when Julian entered, locking the door behind him.

He didn't look at her.

He walked to the window, watching the muddy river swell beneath the storm drains.

"Julian?

What happened at the county records office?" Claire asked, setting down her shears.

"Did you find the excavation permits?"

Julian didn't turn around.

When he spoke, his voice sounded broken, hollowed out from the inside.

"My father didn't just serve on the appellate bench, Claire.

He was on Richard Kane’s payroll."

Claire went completely still.

"What did you say?"

Julian turned around, his eyes red and swollen.

He held out the photocopied dismissal order, the paper trembling in his hand.

"Your mother tried to stop them.

In 2004.

She had the documents, the blood tests, the names of the victims.

She tried to bring a class-action suit against Kane Enterprises to save this neighborhood."

Claire stepped forward, taking the document as if it were a burning coal.

Her eyes scanned the names, settling on the heavy, looping signature of Judge Marcus Vance.

"Your father approved the gag order," she whispered, her voice barely audible above the drumming of the rain.

"He sealed the files.

He left her to die in that ward without a penny, without justice, without anyone believing her."

"Claire, I swear on my mother’s soul, I didn't know," Julian choked out, taking a step toward her with his hands outstretched.

"I spent my entire adult life trying to be different from Harold, trying to be clean, trying to help you—"

"Stop," Claire said.

The word was not loud, but it hit the room with the force of an iron door slamming shut.

She backed away from him until her spine hit the brick wall of the office.

"Don't touch me, Julian."

"Claire, please.

I am not my father.

I didn't do this!"

"Every man in this city has built his throne on the bones of women like my mother," Claire said, tears finally overflowing her lashes, hot and bitter.

"Adrian kept me in a golden cage, blinded by his pride while his father’s legacy poisoned the earth.

And you... you stood beside me, playing the role of the devoted saint, while your family’s hands were covered in the exact same filth."

"I didn't know!" Julian cried, dropping to his knees, his composure completely shattered.

"Please, Claire, let me fix this.

Let me hire the legal team to overturn the seal.

I’ll testify against my own father.

I’ll ruin him!"

"Get out," Claire said, her voice dropping to a deathly whisper.

"Claire—"

"Get out of my clinic, Julian.

Before I call the police."

May you like

Julian looked at her, seeing only the impenetrable wall of ice that five years of betrayal had built around her heart.

He bowed his head, rose slowly to his feet, and walked out of the room, leaving her alone in the shadows of the storm.
