Chapter 18 - The Siege of the Riverfront

At six o'clock the following morning, the low, mechanical rumble of heavy diesel engines shook the foundations of the clinic.

Claire ran to the second-floor balcony, throwing the double doors open to the damp morning air.

Three yellow bulldozers, flanked by two private security transport vans and a municipal zoning cruiser, were idling at the eastern perimeter of the property.

A crew of construction workers was already unrolling razor wire along the fence line, preparing to block the main ambulance entrance.

Victoria Sterling stood by the hood of a luxury SUV, holding a clipboard and speaking through a megaphone.

"Attention staff of the Margaret Bennett Health Center," her voice crackled over the electric speaker.

"Pursuant to Emergency Municipal Order 408-B, this property has been declared an acute biohazard containment zone.

All personnel must evacuate the premises immediately.

Failure to vacate within fifteen minutes will result in immediate arrest and seizure of all medical inventory."

Nurses began screaming from the lower floor as frightened patients clutched their children, looking out through the reinforced glass doors.

Claire sprinted down the central staircase, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

"Hold the doors!" Claire shouted to the orderlies.

"Do not let them break the seal!

This is a licensed healthcare sanctuary!"

She burst through the front double doors, running down the stone steps toward the perimeter fence where the bulldozers were inching forward.

"Victoria, stop this!" Claire shouted over the roar of the diesel engines.

"You know this is an illegal seizure!

The environmental remediation is already underway!"

"Your permits are void, darling," Victoria sneered from behind her sunglasses.

"Harold’s signature was revoked this morning.

We own the commercial notes now, and we are bulldozing this contaminated eyesore into the river."

The lead bulldozer lurched forward, its steel blade lowering to crush the decorative wrought-iron gates that Claire had personally welded to commemorate her mother.

Suddenly, a sleek black sedan tore down the access road at violent speed, swerving across the gravel and screeching to a halt directly in the path of the bulldozer’s tracks.

The heavy machine slammed its brakes, the steel blade stopping a mere six inches from the sedan’s driver-side door.

The door of the car swung open.

Adrian Kane stepped out into the mud.

He wore no coat, only a white dress shirt soaked in grease and rainwater, his hair plastered to his forehead.

He held a red iron crowbar in his right hand.

"Shut the engine off," Adrian commanded, his voice ringing across the clearing like thunder.

The bulldozer driver blinked, looking nervously back toward Victoria Sterling.

"Keep moving, you idiot!" Victoria screamed through the megaphone.

"He’s trespassing on private commercial property!

Run the car over!"

The driver revved the engine, the black exhaust pouring into the sky as the machine lurched forward another two inches, crumpling the front fender of Adrian’s car.

Adrian didn't flinch.

He swung the crowbar with savage, desperate strength directly into the hydraulic pressure hose beneath the machine’s chassis.

A high-pitched hiss tore through the air as pressurized hydraulic fluid sprayed across Adrian’s chest and face, blinding him in a cloud of scalding vapor.

The bulldozer groaned, its massive blade dropping limp into the dirt with a deafening thud as its hydraulic systems failed completely.

Adrian staggered back, coughing violently, the toxic fluid burning his skin as he dropped to one knee in the mud.

"Adrian!" Claire cried out, her instincts as a physician overpowering every ounce of hatred and betrayal in her soul.

She broke through the gate and ran toward the man kneeling in the dirt.
